A 300tdi with a smoking problem

I have a 90 wolf that is due for MOT. When you floor it loads of black smoke is emmitted. It also doesnt have as good fuel consumption rate as my brothers wolf 90...... The previous owner seemed to be a meddler with other parts of the vehicle and I wonder if he has turned the fuel up on the pump. How could I tell if the is the case. How do I remedy it, and is there anything else that could be causing this black smoke as I need it to pass an MOT at the end of the week........

Wind back the pump, sounds for sure like it's been messed with.  Alternatively clean out the intercooler and hoses, check that they havn't delaminated and fit a K&N air filter, so that the air volume is better to match the high fuelling rate.

Ah well theres the question, how much do I turn it down by and where is the adjustment screw..... I would hate to do more damage by not then having enough fuel.

How is the best way to clean out the intercooler?

Intercooler, fill with your choice of parafin, derv (red) degreaser or bioderv/alcohol and leave overnight.

Swill out with degreser etc to get clean, wash and dry thoroughly.

As for the pump, well if it was run standard for a while before the tinkering started then I'd bet you'll see a witness mark on the shaft from the diaphragm that shows where it used to run.  If not just turn it back a little until you are happy :?

Once you've seen the description of how to tune it I'm sure you'll be happier with how, it's been discussed many times before with link to that Dosge RAM website, I don't have a link though.

Another thing to check is the boost pressure.
