New toy, err tool, look I need it to mow the field oK!!!!

Due to someone on this forum prompting me to get interested in them I am now the proud owner of a 1950 Ferguson TE 20 Tractor (Grey Fergie)

Destined to run a topper/mower on my small holding and maybe the odd other job, after searching around for a few months (mainly ebay) I picked up and old copy of Tractor and Machinery I had not fully read and found one in Cornwall, less 5 miles up the road! Painted and in good order (ok hydraulics stick and right hand brake is iffy) £750 with a home  made trailer for carting grass/rocks etc round the land.






Now I need to make sure I fix the problems so it does not end up like the Series

we had one of them with a front loader fitted sitting in the corner of the carpark (read wasteland) at work for over 2 years funny how it disapeared when the price of scrap went up...

used to have one where i worked like that , hand throttle and starter on the gear lever. one chap reversed it into the brook outside the garage  :oops:. saw this at a steam rally at st mawgan ,, sounded cool . alan

If you going to go topping with it get a PTO shaft adapter with a over-run clutch in it.

That's an absolute must. Only a few quid more than a fixed one and well worth it. You will need an adaptor to run any modern equipment off the pto, so get the over run type as suggested above.

Don't be tempted by a topper over 4'. It will cope with a 5', but it is over the limit if you need to cut anything other than grass. Even a 4' will start to bog down in thick thistles, etc.

You will need some lead additive if you intend using it alot. The valves will recess if you run it on unleaded alone.

Ours is a 1950 TE20 too.

Yes ill be getting an over run PTO as I have read about the issues with momentum in the topper etc driving the tractor on.

Curretnly Im favouring a flail mower as they seem to be better at mulching? and can be off set mounted www.tractorfactory.co.uk.  Although I may end up wiht a topper. Thanks for the tip about size, I was planning on a smallish one as I have small paddocks, but could have been tempted by a big one as im off to a farm sale on saturday.mainly looking for a chain harrow.

Good luck with the harrow. They seem to fetch silly money second hand. Make sure you know how much a new one is before you bid!

I rebuilt one with my old man, it only took about 50 hours work, I really loved bobbiling along the fields in it.
