A little help/advice needed (on tyres)
« on: October 30, 2008, 18:15:29 »
hi their people.
we have recently put sum MT tyres (Bronco diamondbacks) on the Disco (200tdi) and fuel consumption has become really bad when driving on roads. expected it to be not so good, but not as bad as it is, £50 lasts about 120 miles!!
so i was wondering is it these specific tyres that are making it so bad on fuel or are all MT tyres bad on fuel when on the roads? or could it be as simple that were running too low pressure in the tyres? if so what psi shold we be running?

many thanks
ste

What mpg was it doing before? What size tyres are they?  Try 28 psi front 35 rear for road use.

there is more rolling resistance with mt tyres

one of the good ideas that steve(david p) has had is to put the mud tyres on steel wheels and have at/road tyres on his alloys. just swap them over when you go out.

Thats about ten gallons of fuel? so works out around 12 miles to the gallon  No way the tyres make THAT much difference, a drop to 24 or 25 yes, but not 12!!

I would look to other problems like a fuel leak, engine condition etc

i no its rediculous!!!!
theirs no leaks and the engine seems to be ok. except alot of smoke when it comes on boost (and just generally alot of smoke)which could mean over fueling??
tyre presures are low (20psi fronts 28psi rears)so will pump them up to whats been recomended above.

thanks for help so far peeps
