I need volunteers
« on: October 31, 2008, 10:36:53 »
As I said in my presentation, I'm working on a mod for rFactor game based on Camel Trophy adventure. Here you've got a small video of an early alpha version: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=t-EY1_J1Iys

Now I need volunteers to record the sound of their own cars. I need starting sounds, idle and maintaining low rev, mid rev, and high rev. If you can record it in a high quality and send me the download link so we don't go through youtube (which reduces much the quality) would be superb.

The engines I want are the 3.5 v8 (which was in 1981 and 1982 Camel Trophy), and the 2.4td (from VM) (which was in 1987).

We are not in a hurry, I need the sounds, but not for tomorrow, take your time ;)

Big thanks in advance and I hope to have volunteers

Regards

It's a pc game. It's called rfactor. www.rfactor.net
The mod is still on an early alpha, so it'll take a big time to publish it.  ;)

I don't know if there will be a big difference in sound between the 3.5 v8 and the 3.9 v8, I suppose not, but you'll know better than me :)
So if there are no big differences , I would be pleased if you could record the sounds

I don't think there is too much difference between the 3.5 and 3.9 and they all have slightly different sounds anyway, so i can record for you....... er.... how do I record it? I think the only recording implement I have is a mobile phone..... actually I do have a microphone at the moment that i could plug into my lap top but i have no softwear to actually record?

The mobile phone surely doesn't have enough quality for us. But with the microphone on the laptop would be fantastic! You can use the sound recorder from Windows, which sould go on your windows installation. It should be in start > programs > accesories > entertainment > sound recorder (sorry if I am not using the exact words, but I've got windows in Spanish and I'm translating it by myself). If you haven't got it, you can add me to messenger if you've got at this adress: crazivant (@) hotmail.com

Thanks  ;)

I looked at rfactor when it was mentioned a little while ago, it looks really good. I spent a couple of hours trying to work out how it works and what to do, but I didn't get anywhere and didn't understand most of it  :? . It looks like a really involved program.

Download a free and perfectly legal program called audacity. I use it all the time and it was featured on the gadget show on ch5 a few years back which is how I found out about it.

As for the vm engine. If I see my mate soon with his rangie I will try and record something for you.

Really impressive vehicle physics... the movement looks spot on in the rough... not sure about the huge jump... nor the power slides... don't think even the slidemeister himself, Tiff Needel, could have kept a classic facing that way while traveling this for that long!

Can't help with the sound but looking forward to seeing more!

We're working on the lights now. I suppose the brake lights are in the same place than position lights (over the blinkers). Am I right?

Well I have been trying to work out how to get the mic to work, thanks muddyjames for the info on the download, great program unfortunately after spending hours going through settings and finding i had to change a setting somewear to allow the input from the mic, I found the mic would work but only with loads of interference took that apart and found it was the betray connection that was causing the interference...... tried to fix it but couldn't so it's in the bin! Will ask around to see if any of my mates has a mic, so stand by for the recording!

UK models, most but not all had combined tail and brake lights at the top, blinkers in the middle alongside the reverse lights and fog/bad weather lights at the bottom.  USA spec didn't have fog lights so the brake lights are at the bottom and an extra side light is in the side panel of the light cluster.  Some UK market models had the side/brake lights at the bottom, but I've never seen one myself.

I can't help with the sound, I'm afraid as mine is a 3.9 with no centre silencer, but just to congratulate you on the work you've done so far.  I'm really impressed with how natural the movement looks. Hard to get a RRC sliding like that, but not impossible.  The off road stuff is particularly impressive.  It will be great to get a really good off-road motorsport sim.  Could save me a load of money! ;)

Same problem here, the 3.5 on carbs souinds quite different from the later. bigger capacity V8s because the longer stroke smoothed out the V8 burble, plus the 3.5s had twin pipes some years, the 3.9 and 4.2 never did.  My 5.0 sounds utterly different otherwise I'd have offered to help myself.

Cool, I like how you can see all the axles and stuff (and they go up and down with the wheels), even down to the exhaust hanging down.

Got to say im well impressed with that, all looks very realistic. Possibly a bit rough, not sure land rover transmission could cope with the hill climb in the first video!

Anyhow i got a mic (for skype) for xmas so i could record. But mines doesn't have standard exhaust (doesn't really have much exhaust!) and sounds a bit visous.

But i can have a bash when i get it going if you like?

Nick

ps what do you intend to do with this anyhow?

Thanks a lot!! That's cool!! Looking forward to having them :P
I only ask you not to record the sounds too near the exhaust (near the bonnet or in the car would be good ;) )

Thanks for your offering, but I want all sounds with default exhausts. Exhaust makes a big difference in sound.

And, about the 1st video... physics have changed from it to now, and now the car isn't able to get the top of that hill, mainly because it has more inertia and at the start of the hill the suspension bumps a little more so the front bumper hits the hill. ;)
