speed demand!
« on: November 02, 2008, 01:15:45 »
i have a 1989 200tdi discovery an i want to make it faster what do.

im going to do the fuel pump soon i hope, so that should make it a bit faster.

i fitted a boost gauge the other week an im getting 1.5 bar / 21.55662 psi, that sounds a lot!

Cheers,
Nick

Clean the intercooler would be the first step, remove the EGR (if fitted), clean the inlet manifold.
Turn the injector pump diaphram 90° clockwise and then take it out for a drive.
You may find that that's all you need.
If you want more then you're talking larger intercooler, more alterations to the injector pump, referb the injectors or fit a V8.  :D

Look to the basics also. Ensure it can breath freely, clean air filter, no kinks in pipes, putting a straight through middle pipe on to replace the old exhaust. Check tyre pressures, keep it well serviced etc.

Check the intercooler hoses, do they swell a lot under load - if so, change em.

EGR removal is easy, ebay kits are about £10.

Remove the viscous fan - this is sometimes a contentious issue, some think it has an effect, others disagree. I removed mine last week - definate change for the better. Accellerates better and is quieter, especially on the motorway.
If you do this make sure your cooling system is in good nick. Best to flush your rad out with the garden hose in both directions, fill will new anti-freeze coolant and carry the fan and spanner in the bout for the first thousand miles or so until you trust it.

Stu.

No EGR on 200tdi.
1.5 bar of boost is a lot, they run a bar at the turbo as standard. When we did my 200tdi, we tweeked it to just over a bar at the inlet manifold, then adjusted the pump accordingly.

200tdi's run at 0.7 std
300tdi's run at 1bar

1.5bar, that sounds alot, i take it you have tee'd in at the turbo and not at the inlet plenum
i could only gety 1.5bar out of my 200 with a brand new turbo that was modded alot...
now got a 300tdi turbo on my 200 comp truck and i need a bigger boost guage than 2bar
