Reasons for buying a cage !!!

Certainly food for thought, for all you people who don't have a cage....BE CAREFUL.
Driver was simply trying something that was a little too challenging...

I have pretty much decided that im not going to do anything other than drive on flat wet (and not too wet) grass without a cage.

Its amazing to me how many poeple think that only the experts need a cage as they do that hard stuff, having seen a defender that had a roll theres no way id want to be in one that went over.

Although im yet to do any events I have seen what happens at track days to peoples cars who come off and all of a sudden its not fun anymore. So dont think "it wont happen to me!"

You're quite safe as long as you don't do anything stupid (ala try to recreate parts of the Camel Trophy at a Pay and Play) and don't go beyond the limitations of the vehicle and your skill on given terrain.

What I wouldn't mind knowing is what the bloody hell was the Discovery driver doing to end up with the vehicle on its roof like that?  Were they trying to launch the front end into the air or something daft like that?

If you look on the first youtube clip...
To the left of the Disco there's a climb, with, on the left side, a bit of vertical cliff type overhang...they went up that, flat out, so it just flipped 'em straight over  :shock: :shock: :shock:

If he wants to drive up steep slopes like a loon, then he should expect things to go wrong.

I know the Discovery is.....erm......very damaged but, next time you right a vehicle use another vehicle with a rope on the other side to ease it back onto four wheels. Since too many just topple over onto the other side. And put the handbrake on!!.

My maybe im slightly overstating the issue about not wanting to go offroad wihtout a cage but I suppose my point is this.

Whilst lots/ost  of "accidents" are no doubt caused by the driver exceeding their abilities, when you are new to it there is always an element of "bad luck" or "justifiable inexperience" or maybe even poor "course" design, e.g. failed climb with a drop/rock on the side that could turn you. 

Id rather not be the 1 in 1000 that was just bad luck!

Mind you I am a safety paraniod, The First thing I got for my Grey Fergie was a Roll bar, My Elise has a full plumbed extinguisher despite not needing one for the regs, I ware Hi Viz on my farm, I never work up ladders when im the only one around, My Frelander has 24hr rations in case I get stuck on the Moors on the way home and I never step on the lines in the pavements due to the risk of bears.

good old pay and break sites!!!

Some sites I have been too have been good honest fun with little to cause anyone rolling over (harbour hill site near Reading) and they have roll cage only areas. I love that site and was the first site I ever went to. Not been for years now.   :'(

However another site I went to, most of the hills were just asking for someone to get hurt. 1 toyota hilux (similar to the top gear one) went round and his fuel tank fell off twice up a hill and he rolled back over it and then thankfuly before it fell off a 3rd time and exploded his chasis snapped in half.  :roll: I have never been back to that site. Dont get me wrong I had a good time doing the few easy non damaging bits and was with mates so a good day was had but pay and break sites vary so widely in condition and experience needed.

My favourite day out of the year though has to be the Abingdon 4x4 festival. Been 5 times and loved every year and for 1st timers you can get someone to co pilot for you. I tend to co pilot my mates around if they are nervous.

I am guessing though that, that disco was a write off.  :-k

I'm another who's looking to get a cage ! I've been to quite a few pay & plays & I've seen plenty of vehicles on their roofs or sides. I've always thought it'll never happen to me but I can see how it's quite possible to make a mistake or misread a particular part of a track & get in trouble.

 Even more of a persuasive argument presents itself when you look at the many excellent pics & videos posted on the various forums of folks greenlaning trips. There are some big old drops off the edges of some of those lanes high up in the Peaks or Wales or wherever. One false move & you could be rolling over & over & ..........................................  :shock:

 I recently had 'a moment' where I was high up on a grassy track in Derbyshire with only the vaguest of wheel tracks to follow in - obviously not that well used - and as the track turned a very sharp left back on itself, the drop to the right - had I slipped - would have seen me rolling to the bottom & I prefer not to think of the consequences !

 Any vehicle roof can crush in & looking at my Defender roof, I don't feel too reassured I must say  :roll:

 Our hobby can be dangerous. We do sign forms acknowledging that when we enter pay & play sites. Accidents will happen. Yes, I'm definitely getting a cage ( I just convinced myself !!!)   :lol:

I trial CCV with a series which has a rear hoop and stays and although I've never been right over, I have been on my side a few times [-o<

However I have taken my Discovery to some extremes with no problems at all both on private land and greenlanes, so would hesitate to roll cage that!

Health and safety is coming in more and more with these P&P sites and some are insisting on road taxed vehicles only, but then provide terrain that a sensible person would insist on a cage! IMHO you can't do both realistically! If its a daily drive then often a cage in impractical (obviously things like 90 truck cabs are fine, but a Disco??)

Well I thought it was good and it has certainly sparked discussion! Its just a shame the handbrake didn't work as that makes people assume, and we all know what that does??

The only rope I can see is the one that (appears) to being used to right the vehicle. If there is a rope attached to the other side that I can't see then you have my apology.

Prehaps a lesson to be learned is to put the vehicle in gear as well....just in case :) Nobody is perfect, we should all continue to learn.

Not at all. It has made people realise what to do to avoid such things at pay'n'play and what to do should things go wrong. I wish not that I hadn't made any comments either and prehaps I should have kept my observations to myself and let other find out the hard way too.
