autobox problem

 Right just fitted a ZF 4 speed gearbox in my range,  changed the fillter and oil and it dosen't  seem to drive at all!!!  :'(


 PLEASE CAN SOMEONE HELP???????????

sounds like theres a prob with the torque converter
what way did u fit the box , fit the tourqe con to the box and then put the box in or fit the torque con to the flywheel and then out the box in ?

iv had it before when u damage the drive in the torque converter when fitting

we put the converter in the box first then fitted it, i just swopped the convertor that was out the orgianl gearbox...

have u got the right amount of oil in box an also when i did 1 i had to go through all the gears a couple of times an silly question but easily done the transfer box hasnt been knocked in2 neutral has it an also check that the pump on the auto box is workin disconnect the pipe to the oil cooler an start car up an put it in gear if oil comes out pump workin if it dont pump aint working so u wont get any gears

Yeah, what he said.  Part of the service check was to connect a pressure gauge to the oil delivery pipe and there is a connection at the front end of the boc for it, so check you have oil moving about in the box.  Also if you swapped the fileter check it's seated properly with the seal in place.

Ok ill give that a try then. I know this is prob a daft question but where in the box is the oil pump??
 I assumed the convertor sort of acted like a pump for it!! Im not to clued up when it comes to autoboxes...!!!

if i remember rightly the pump is inside the box above the filter but i dont think u can change it while box is in car think its a gearbox strip down to change it

The torque converter has 3 drives in it, the outer one has 2 dog teeth that drive the oil pump, so the pump is a couple of inches inside the box, inside that drive (hollow shaft) is the stator drive, the part of the torque converter that stays still (it increases efficiency) then the inner is the drive shaft to the gears.  If you assemble any of the above wrong then when you cramp the engine and box together something gives, commonly it's the drive dogs of the pump that shatter the rather brittle guts of the pump itself.

The exact same thing has happened to my rangie, my friend fitted the auto box & said he has done it correctly. I then drove it home 35 miles & when I went to use it again 1st gear stuck a little then about a mile down the road it lost all drive, forward & reverse.

Took off an oil cooler pipe & there doesn't seem to be any oil pressure.

Its now stuck at my parents house untill I figure out whats up with it  :'(

Just remember the cooler is in the oil return line (low pressure), to check the delivery pressure you need to remove something form the front of the gearbox.

I checked it from the oil cooler behind the grill, took off one of those pipes.
