Well today is day 1, have been awake 2 hours and so far only nearly killed 1 person!

hahaha when i quit i was like that,had to substitute it for coffie....then that for DR pepper....and im still stuck there....but im working on it

Well i am on cherry coke, did the dr pepper thing last time, but going to join the local cannons health club place and try and get down the gym3 times a week to not put the weight on. Put on 4" round the waist last time i gave up lol.

yes that is another thing, i went to a gymn infact in my avitar(dont know if you can see it) but my arms are like drain pipes.....not like that anymore:(

This 'health benefit timetable' helped me when I stopped 3 years ago.

Within 20 minutes your blood pressure and pulse returns to normal.
Within 8 hours nicotine and carbon monoxide levels in blood reduce by half, oxygen levels return to normal and circulation improves.
Within 24 hours carbon monoxide and nicotine are eliminated from the body.
Within 48 hours the ability to taste and smell improves.
Within 3 days your breathing becomes easier as your bronchial tubes begin to relax.
Within a few weeks your fingers lose their yellow stains and your skin looks better.
Within 1 month your appearance improves - skin loses its greyish pallor and becomes less wrinkled.
Within 3-9 months coughing and wheezing declines.
Within 1 year the risk of heart attack reduces by half compared to that of a smoker.
Within 10 years the risk of lung cancer falls to about half that of a smoker.
Within 15 years your risk of coronary heart disease is the same as a non-smoker.

When I get asked how do you stop smoking. I just say "just stop". Thats it. Just stop smoking. Grit you teeth and get on with you life. Don't think about how long it has been since you last smoke, just remember the timetable above and look forward to the next benefit milestone.

Get down to your practice nurse and ask her for "Champix" the magic bullet pills. Wife used them to great effect.

They work by blocking the nicotine receptors rather than replacing the nicotine. With the receptors blocked you get no hit even if you have a sly fag... she stopped dead after three days and that was a yeasr ago. The only thing she has had to cope with is what to do with her hands when driving etc.

This was my downfall yesterday :(

Had to go down to london as a last minute thing and ended up smoking loads as the trains were a nightmare and then spending 10 hours in the car coming home.

So new start date is looking like Thursday now!

I will succeed, i did it cold turkey last time, my mistake this time was not planning it better, but Thursday is planned better! Am just not gonna get out of bed for 3 days - thats how i did it last time! lol

Bettyblue22 has also given up today and we will be going through this together, although she is at work overnight tonight which makes it easier for me!!! hehehe

did it cold turkey 4-5 weeks ago, cant remember tbh!!

Tell you this man apart from the 3400 cups of coffee i have a day i feel great and will never look back!! went to a house warming at the weekend and everyone smoked apart from me and her indoors all i could think was how bad everything smelt and when i got home i scrapped my clothes because of the smell will never go back to that!

Keep it up. I have always stopped in the past the cold turkey method, but then again i am now smoking again so i guess i am not a good advert for that :-k

I f you want to stop you will, if you are stopping because others want you to stop its harder. I have now resigned to giving up, giving up :twisted:

Andy, i dont think its the method in which you give up that causes you to start again.

We all have our trigger points, mine was stress, but now i am on day 3 and happy enough!

Just got the price to join the local Cannons health doofer place, and i think i may just need a second mortgage lol

my trouble is i enjoy a smoke, and i must admit it helps when stressed. I have only given up in the past under pressure from the family, and never because i really wanted too.

Joining a gym is a help. Last time i did this, and its was good to go down a few times a week and take it all out on the exercise equipment. Round here we have a group of gyms which i think are part of, or subsidized by the council, and a lot cheaper than the private ones, and in my opinion just as good.

Yea, but i wanted to go to the posh one as a reward. Thats the other thing you need when you give up smoking, a reward or goal to work towards.

Put the money aside you would have spent on the old habbit, and you will soon be able to treat yourself.

Well I gave up smoking 6 weeks ago :D but have started today as everyone has told me to as my temper is becoming dangerous :shock: :oops: :oops:but not going to go through 30 a day like I was but around 5 a day for a few weeks/months before I quit again ;)

I came home from work one Friday and threw my cigarette pack on the kitchen worktop.
I did not smoke that evening.
I did not have a cigarette on the Saturday, nor the Sunday.
I left the pack where it was on the Monday and did not smoke.
I did not smoke on the Tuesday, nor Wednesday or any day that week.
I did not smoke the following week, or the one after.
I did not smoke the following month, or the next, etc.
I did not smoke the following year, or the next.
I haven't had a smoke for nearly 5 years.
I wanted to quit, so I did.

It will be 3 years this January since I gave up - this thread was doing the rounds at the time
