Wacky Idea using ABS.... :)

Hi,  I've had an idea that I'd like to play with on my old Disco.

My thinking is that the ABS can apply the brakes (if it wants to).  As it releases and re-applys the brakes in a situation when you activate it.

Now if we can tweak that to apply brakes to any one or more wheels on demand then it could be used as a primitive traction control system.

So it seems I need a way of activating the ABS pump and then somehow to work out which connections to use to apply braking pressure to each particular wheel.

Does this seem do-able???

Yeah, but that would cost a lot more than a few switches and a bit of wire :D

I think you are going to be re-engineering things. Our 94 plated Range Rover SE uses the ABS as traction control. In order to do it you need an ECU to control things. Bit more than "a few switches and a bit of wire "

Also, you are going to be messing about with the braking system. never mind what the MOT man might think of a heath robinson affair... consider what might happen if your home made system develops a fault doing 70(ishhh) in the outside lane of the Mwhatever!!

I think it's an interesting intelectual challenge, but I think it'd be safer to leave well alone.

I wasn't thinking of replicating a fully automated system like the factory fit system. More of a manual per wheel braking system.

Obviously i would be providing a way of totally isolating the mods and only activating them under the bonnet when off road.

Does anyone know the pinouts of the abs modulator?

Um, it's what happens on a D2, so not really unknown for a Disco . . . . . .

I suspect you might need to fit stronger diffs as part of the trickery, as, if you're aiming to basically lock up a wheel if it's spinning, then all the torque will go through the planets gears in the diff, and the standard ones will last........ well, not long...LOL

At one point tree sliders and detachable towbars were unknown ground, someone has to be the first to try it.  :D

You could get this work but you may nip up a spinning wheel too sharply and break a half shaft....

So why not just do the same by left foot breaking?

I have driven a defender, without TC, out of elephants footprints (fully crossaxeled) by gently dabbing the breaks with my left foot once the wheels start spinning when I have temporarily lost forward momentum, and it works quite well for free!
