300tdi brakes problem
« on: November 05, 2008, 20:59:11 »
I am having some scary issues with my little daisy, she is ok when the brakes are used regular during a journey, untill they aren't used for about 3 mins minimum, then the pedal can be pressed almost to the floor then a second pump works the brakes as normal. The vaccuum servo is ok, the brake pads and discs are all fine too. It has up near max on brake fluid, i just dont know what the hell it could be. I don't want to have to change the brake servo itself, so if there are any tests I can do, please let me know, or someone come HELP!!!!
Cheers. Craig

have you checked the vacuum lines these have a tendency to perish or split? Also has or is the vac pump noisey it usually sounds like tappets out of adjustment and gets louder then stops when its busted?

The vaccuum pump is sucking nicely, if you remove the pipe, and press the brakes, the pedal goes solid. Put it back on then the pedal is back to normal.

I would have a good look at that pipe that runs from the pump as mine was full of cracks and i only noticed when i changed the vac pump, incidently did you replace the gasket when you removed the vac pump?

Right then that rules out the pump and the pipe, have you tried bleeding?Im assuming that your disco has abs,and im sure i read somewhere that air collects/gets trapped in the abs pump thingy but i could be way off the mark here mate as mine has no abs,so im clutching at straws here now, sorry i couldnt be more helpful.

Bled the brakes tonight, still got the same problem. Any ideas? Solid when vaccuum pipe removed, soft when replaced.

Have you nboticed any drop in the brake fluid?

What stae are the flexi pies in... could be them balooning... after resting... they reduce... then the sfot feel is them balooning again up to their max so pedal goes firm again..?

not seen any drop in fluid, and had the wheels off tom=night to check when doing the bleeding, they looked ok. I dont know if the actual brake servo/ master cylinder may be at fault somewhere, any checks on that I can do?

Are your wheel bearings OK ?

If they are a little lose the discs kind of 'wobble' and push the pads back into the calipers so that the first push of the peddle reseats the pads, a bit like when you change the pads and have to reseat them.

Just a thought
