couple of 300tdi questions
« on: November 12, 2008, 17:04:28 »
recently bought a m reg 300tdi ES.

one of its probs is the heater fan works on 1 and 4 and reading about ,, i gathered you can fit climate control out of a D2.  ?

2nd prob is the temp gauge not working,  ive not gone as far as shorting the cable out to rule out the sender but thought id ask while asking about other things.

3rd one is I went to tweak the fuel pump and i have this bosch round type thing bolted to to the side using 2 of the pump flange securing screws, have i got something weird there and shouldnt mess or is it a case of undo , turn the pump as normal ?

Mark, I don't know about one and two, but three I can answer.
The round thing is the throttle position senser for the EGR valve.  If you have blanked the EGR then you don't have to worry about it, if you haven't blanked the EGR why not?

if your blower is only working on a couple of settings, then it could be the resistor has partially failed. It varies the fan speed by using different (selectable) resistances. Shouldn't be expensive/difficult to fix.

my m reg 300tdi es also has funny blowers. it works on all speeds except on 4 it works for a while then cuts out and cuts back in again a few seconds later. Also if you take the key out the ignition it carries on blowing!

I think it is a feature of our breed disco!

If anyone has fitted climate control from a Disco 2 I'd be very interested - it would be a lot of work considering the fact that the Disco 1 vent controls are purely mechanical.

climate control.  -- i think probably not as easy as it appeared to say,.     i will seeif i can locate a unit to have a look,. probaby find it will activate cruise control or something. or blow all the fuses

yeah.  i think ghosts come as stanard in the ES model.   and my ghost is stood on the Rev counter at the moment as that works when it feels i need to know what the revs are.

EGR,   whats the pro and cons to blanking it off. i see the blankers are cheap.  what will it do for the emissions come mot time.

Pump thanks very much , soon as we get some normal weather i will nip out give it a tweak.

temp gauge, same as above weather permitting

The feed for the rev counter is the thin (I think white) wire on the back of the alternator.  You've properly got a dodgy connection.

cool. will leave the egr alone.

not checked out the wiring on the  dizzy might do that in a minute along with the fuel pump.

as for climate.     ive found i have left the direction dial alone it sits on my feet and windscreen, so maybe if there was no control over that when the climate was fitted but everything else worked it wouldnt be so bad..

might do a bit of seraching see if the plug is the same as thats half the battle

I think what James meant is that you'll get better economy and more power if you blank the EGR off - it works by feeding exhaust gases back into the intake which as you might imagine doesn't do your engine any favours. Mine has been through two MOTs with it blanked, no problems. It reduces a form of emissions that isn't tested in the UK IIRC.

Your engine will run better and live longer if it isn't being forced to breathe sooty gunk!
