Hi all after dropping my daughter of at play school today only half a mile up the road and yes i was one of them dearly hated parent with a 4x4 and living so close i could of walked :lol: well on my way home about 100yds from my drive i heard a bang in the front wheel and so i took the drivers side hub off and this is what happened do you think i can put them back in :lol: i have a full new set coming but more to the piont where the hub seal goes inside there is a bad scratch would i need to get a new hub please see pics

looks like you got your work cut out to get it ready for saturday henry make sure when
you fit the new ones you pack the bearings with plenty of grease work it well in dont just lay
it on the bearing they must of been well worn or tightend to much in the past :D

if the inner bearing has been spinning on the stub axle it will definitley need replaced, the same if it has been turning in the hub, if you need to replace the stub use genuine landrover as the paddock stubs and bearing seals are crap, timken bearings from them are ok though, job should only take around an hour or so if you are taking your time

i knocked mine out with a small pointed punch just worked my way round slowly not to damage it but while youve stripped it down you could put new discs on as well cant realy see what they like in photo mate

yep thats the way a punch or a little chisel onto the outer lip of the bearing :D

Those bearings don't look that bad m8, if you had seen mine when i got home the last time we were at 3 hole you'd of thought that i'd of put them through a blender and my stub axle wasn't any better either

All I got when I took mine off last month was a handfull of rollers and a very thin very sharp metal ring :lol: :lol: :lol:

It sounds as if it's friction welded itself to the sub, Not good news as you'll need a new sub also

I think you may as well replace the stub axle! I didn't and had to do my bearings again a month later!!

Also if you have just got it, be prepared for picking up on the maintenance he previous owner didn't!!

Why were you offended? I had no idea that Henry had got this from another forum member, and also no idea that he had gone in with his eyes open. All i said was that if there are maintenance issues then chances are there will be more to come! By the law of averages, the Discovery's bought on this forum will come from OUTSIDE the forum, therefore it is a fair assumption that they have not been looked after. Coming from INSIDE the forum generally means there are maintenance issues but that the previous owner is aware and has notified the new purchaser (as has happened here!!)

so frankly I could say that I am offended because you got offended by my comment! But that is not the case, I made a statement based on the information I had, no need to get offended in my books.

You are both assuming that everyone has total knowledge of your transaction. I know that you never said the other owner was at fault and I never suggested that he was!! I said be prepared to pick up on the maintenance that the previous owner didn't!! Thats not to say that the vehicle was neglected or abused, it is simply that sometimes we don't get time to sort out problems on our own vehicles, stop being so bloody precious!

The bearing centre isn't necessarily friction welded to the stub - sometimes they shrink through heat and are just incredibly tight. Grind best part of the way through the track and then smack it with a blunt chisel, so that it cracks. If it then just slides off - you will probably get away with re-using the stub. Looking at the general condition of it though - I would say you would be wise to replace it.
The hub - If you had to knock the bearing track out, rather than it fall out, then it can be re-used. It takes a bit of pressure to fit the new track, so you should guage the condition of the hub by how difficult it is to fit the new bearing track.
