Brake Pads
« on: November 17, 2008, 11:40:24 »
Was planning to change the front brake pads this weekend and dutifully bought the pads and mounting kit what i thought was the right VIN number, pulled the wheel to find that the mounting springs and pads seem to be the older type (split pin, pre-KA034313) instead of the newer version (solid rod) that the age of the vehicle would imply. pads were of the older type.

So.. does anyone know if the brake calliper part number is stamped on it anywhere? Will it make any difference using new style pads in an (possibly) old style calliper?

Thanks,

Ed.

my parts manual states that there indeed different calipers depending on year of disco

also list pads and retention kits with different numbers

its not clear from the pictures if they are interchangeable however

sorry.  :(

I didn't know the pads themselves were any different :-.

looking at the diagram the pads look the same but the retaining method is different.

however that doesnt mean they wont fit

split pin or solid pin either way as long as they hold the pads in................... :)

further (web) investigation and the pictures of the 2 possible callipers are EXACTLY the same, only difference between the pads i can see is the new ones have holes in the top for the rods and the old one have a central tab. Appear to be interchangeable then!

but loking at eds 200tdi and my 300tdi at the weekend and I have the tab type with split pin. Strange why I have the older type and not newer type.

It's looking like fitter incompetence more than anything, changeover is meant to be mid K-reg (KA034313), if the parts are interchangeable what ever comes to hand is probably getting slapped in.

Given the choice it'd be nice to think the later style of mounting is an improved version.  It may have been changed to make it cheaper though

well the answer to the question is the mounting kit for the new style brake pads DOESN'T fit (what turns out to be) the old style callipers. Handily Paddocks are going to swap the pads and mounting kit for free for me. so thought for the week: don't trust the chassis number changeover values.
