was going to ge the winch tray back on today but the portal box put up a fight! whos idea was it to rivvet the damn back plate to the drum! got it off though. with the drums, the pistons the shoes ant other assorted crap that came off i saved and weighed.......25.3kg! damn holmes!


graham at overland really showed me up with this, i was trying all sorts to get the outer plate off...5 minuites with him and it was off!


anyone need unimog brake stuff....come see me! :lol:

considering there 40 years old, give or take a few, there not too bad on the inside! i was expecting mayonaise!



these little blighters took ages to get out! there the pins that hold in thebrake shoes and they just diddnt want to come out.

urgahhhhhhh!

bloody heat! had to cut the welding session in favor of a cold shower! then back home.


front tray violation is compleete and in place. just needs welding. the job was only soposed to take an hour or two but took ages.











found a bloke in the states that can machine up new flanges for me so i can go back to landrover wheels and most importantly LR brakes. not
t paying $180 for new chevy or ford disks!

not really an update, im just really happy with the weld quality i got from my sealy welder. 15mins of TLC did it the world of good.....only problem is i only get 6mins @150amps  :'( trying to buy a migatronic but miganglia are messing me around abit(alot ) might just get a TIG



welding quality isnt great at the moment, havnt welded properley in aaaages! also the 3/4 length cast on my arm doesnt help  :lol:













really not sure on how to plate the top up though. not sure weather i should just box it in and put a square plate at the back or slope it down to make it look an integral part of the chassis....but that would take a little more work.


any thoughts?


any way im pleased with the welds(bit of a make or brake moment) looks better that the welds on the 90 trayback in lrm atleast

 that does sound good dude slope it down to make it look like part of the chassis just 1 of those lil touches that make all the difference . . .

 and then put a flat plate over the top to cover it all up should look pukka dude

it doesnt need to be cut or sloped really. the chassis sort of slopes down after the spring seats so i can use the  loooooooooong plate supplied with the mount plonk it on top of the welded bits and it will eventially meet the chassis i jsut need to cut a few more brackets off which i really dont want to do becasue the mounting holes could be handy. ill see what springs to mind tomorow.

Keep going. I find it interesting, and its also good to see how someone else works if you see what I mean. Just out of interest, what amp is your welder, I use a 130 amp one but just killed it so might go bigger.

 thats what im using and sometimes it doesnt seem man enough to weld the metal together . . . might have to get a bigger 1 . .  but keep the 130 amp for body welding

its a 150 amp sealy quite happily welds 6mm plate if you get usedto the welder but only for 6mins :lol:
its more than enough for general modifying im just going a bit ott with welds, bit [!Expletive Deleted!] off with the way the ones on the tray look but i know they penitrated.

it might be up for sale soon if either of you are interested only going to fund my big one...or a TIG :roll:

the 7.5mx6mmx25mm piece of steel cost me £10.80 :D

bought that, 2 lengths(7.5m) of 50x50x3mm box, 4 lengths of 25x25x3mm and a sheet of 2mx1mx1.5mm alli sheet for £130 deliverd! (with the 6mm flat bar)

i know what you mean about watching other people work. i have learnt so much from jsut looking and keeping my mouth shut (very old skool college lecturer :lol:). i dont have a problem with posting its jsut that the ammount of time i spend taking photos, uploading them to photobucket and then doing a little write up on here is taking build time away. not many were still posting so thought evereyone had lost interest.....not going to waist build time if no one wants to know about it.

Seriously, keep going. While I have no intention of hacking most of my bodywork off and fitting Unimog axles this is still interesting stuff, and a lot of the fabrication ideas can be applied to far less extreme vehicles.

I'm guessing the tray was designed for D44's 110 tray back which IIRC has quite a bit taller chassis rails, to be honest where those holes extend above the chassis looks nasty. Fortunately the number of stress cycles from winching and recovery is relativerly low so fatigue failure shouldn't be an issue. A good weld in the wrong place can be as likely to crack as a bad weld in the right place.

Using what you have, I would probably cut the rear corners off the outer at an angle to follow the profile of the rear slot and match this profile on the inside plates. Then cover over the top with a length of flat and bend the flat to follow the profile cut in the side plates.

Is the exposed cavity between the winch tray and chassis open at the bottom?
If so then just leaving it open at the top is another option.

The build looks great, i would love to do this to my disco at some point, i have got about half way through doing a pick up to my disco, ie, i have run out of funds but it is driveable now and i have done a few events in it. would love to put tubular steel over the wheel arches to make it kind of a cladded tray back.

Exactly. I don't really get into the serious hacking about, I can do it, its just at the moment I don't have the facilities to do it, not with three trucks of my own in the workshop at the moment. One of which is seriously hacking me off and about to get blown up.

Re the welder - I needed one for later this week so went out this morning and spent £490 on one, and Ive also repaired the 130 lol.

Is it a local place you get the steel from or a website?

I get quite a bit from the local scrapyard - they seem to have loads at good prices, and most of it is in good shape.

Sweet i am glad that i am not the only one that thought of this, i have seen it on Jeeps, but when mentioned to some of the club members i got mixed reveiws.

Not to hijack the tread, but my idea would be to start at the front chassis and then kind of join to the rock rails, similar to the trial wing style, come off the back of the rock rails and then join to the back chassis. this done on both sides with winch trays filling in the gaps in the middle.

what you think boss? you seem to have a good idea about these things. Or anyone else to that matter.
