tyres; thick or thin?

as a recent convert to narrow tyres i must admit that i'm impressed both with on and off road handeling. i know a lot of store has to be put in having the right tread pattern for your intended use but as a generalisation do you prefer wider or narrower tyres and why?

Wider on road up to a point, medium off road as a compramise.  Wideris good in boggy stuff but on a muddy track where youknow there is a hard layer underneath go for narrow, it's only a problem if there is nothing under the mud to grip.

Time after time we see big fat tyres on 4x4's because they "look good" then see that person confused because the off road ability is crap!! I PERSONALLY believe that 750>16 or 235.85.16 (which are similar size) is the optimum size for mud and ruts. relatively narrow.

I think the weight of the car has a lot to to with tyre choice.

Landies especially older ones seemed to go for narrower tyres.........to cut through crud wheras Jeeps and others seemed to stick with wider

Guess its the terrain...check the tyres on WRC cars for winter scandanavian rallys...

yeah I'm also a firm believer in my 35 x 12.50 x 15s on my 110 double cab - i've tried the thin route but they weren't the best in a lot of situations for me

Yeah I can vouch for that.

Although the major advantage with the 35's is the under axle clearance.

Oh and BTW Jim Im saving up for another landy!

i use 10.50 wide mts and for what i do find thats fine,

have left other trucks with wider tyres sliding all over the place at trails and p&p sites

A lot will depend on what type of ground you are using it on. I have 35/12.5/16 and F&R lockers, but I was beaten by a standard Disco going up a grass bank on 235/70/16 BFG MTs. But I got every where else he could not.

tiz, gearing, axle clearence, tyre cleaning capabilitys ect
also driver plays a big part
11.5 is the optimum size for a landy
however, i prefer thinner tyres ( 35/10.5r16 simex) and have drove further than a identical truck thats running 11.5 simex, both with lockers ect

It depends on what you want to do, wider tyres can reduce you lb/in footprint weight, allowing the vehicle to move over softer surfaces easier. Yet Thinner tyres will fit into ruts better and cut through the mud to a harder base.

I prefer using wider tyres to narrow, also prefer 35" for the extra clearance.

The lanes around here are thick ice, it's about 6 mile to the main gritted road, i've got 10.50 muds,  their fine untill you come off the throttle then you have a 2 ton sledge. Think i might dig out an old set of michelin 205 m+s, i know nothing will grip on ice but they may be a little better. I have to keep using the hedge banks for grip  :D  good fun but sooner or later i'll come unstuck.
