Weve got a McCulloch strimmer that has done the same, I think its the magneto type thingemy bob that give the plug power to spark.

cleaned the fuel strainer out in the tank ?
have you put your thumb over the ventury on the carb to see if there is any induction off it ?
is it low on compression ?, what oil mix are you running it at ?
should be 25:1 with ordinary 2/t oil
40:1 with semi or synthetic oil

are you getting fuel through? is the plug getting wet? if not could be the rubber diaphragm in the carb has a small hole or split
