Defender 300tdi.

Would not start this morning, just a click from starter motor solenoid, no previous issues leading up to this.

Removed starter motor and tried it on a battery, would only spin up at certain positions.
Anyway, I took cover off and found the whole brush end filled with a carbonised fluff that looked either like burnt fibreglass or felt. And a thin strip of plastic/string about 4 inches long.

I cleaned out all this crap and reassembled and tested on battery again. Seems to spin up fine now, could not find a dead spot.

ANY idea what the hell that fluff was? I do not think it got in from outside, so must be something that was in there. Is there a felt bush or something supposed to be in there that maybe got loose and caught up?  ... and more importantly do I need what ever it was?  [-o<

cheers

No idea what fluff was, bit off insulation that got caught up maybe.

This the place for a moan?

Anyway, solenoid burnt out by this time. So being stuck here I sent a relative to pick up a starter motor from a breaker and relay specific instructions not to give me a piece of cheap aftermarket tat, I want Bosch or at least valero/lucas.

Got it today and it's a piece of poop. Cracked Brush housing which will let water/dirt in easily. No OEM labels or markings, but 'other' labels present and different housing design, so it a crappy refurb or a Chinese cheapy which are only £80 notes ish new. The dog gear doesn't travel to the end of shaft so would need some attention -easy fix but I shouldn't have to that not for the £50 notes they charged me for the privilege of getting the nastiest article they had on the shelf. Probably trying to pull a fast one because I sent a female mule to pick it up

Needless to say it's on it way back. Meanwhile I have borrowed a starter off a neighbour from a 19J engine so am up and running ready to kick some rip off pikie gas axe monkey in the buttocks.

Result  :D
Boss of breaker yard is a friend of another family member who is a head mechanic and well known local lad. He confirmed what a pile of crap it was - and phoned the guy up. Boss changed his tune, gobbed off at who ever picked the thing off the shelf and bent over backwards and sorted out a decent Bosch replacement fresh off a disco.
Bonus is I got the cheap one too as a 'spare'
