Santa hats are dangerous!
« on: December 02, 2008, 21:01:09 »
I have started wearing a Santa hat, sorry a hat that looks like one Santa may wear, at work and I was told I cant wear it this year due to work health and safety policy. A notice is up at work saying no lorries ar to be decorated and fancy dress is not aloud due to H&S.

I turned around and said it isnt a Santa hat, it is a hat that is keeping my head warm and it just so happens to look like Santas.

I mean, come on, how can a hat that looks similar to Santas be dangerous whilst loading wheelie bins or driving the lorries?  :-k

Elf and Saftey police

Very good!!

totaly barmy I think. I would have thought carrying bin bag size bags of glass and paper down alley ways is more dangerous my self but there we are. If this aht makes my back twinge then we will know it is more dangerous. Will keep you informed if it does!

Ere Wormster..... it seems Dorset and Zumerset are now deeper and darker than the rest of the country...LOL!!!

As for H&S....... it's all to do with litigation, the boss's are scared of having their ar5e sued.... simple as that.......

Wear the hat anyway, if it keeps your head warm, if they complain, see what the union rep says about it...!!

The correct response to any sentence containing the phrase "health and safety reasons" is:  "What reasons are those exactly then?"

If they can't explain what the reasons are, then they don't exist.  IMHO it usually means "I don't want you to do that, but I can't be bothered to explain why, so I'm going to tell you it's for health and safety reasons and hope you don't actually question it."  Call their bluff.

I used to live in Cheltenham, one year the council said that Taxis couldnt have world cup flags on because if they did people might think that all cars with flags on were taxis and then women were at risk of using a non taxi. They diddnt explain if cars without flags would be considered as taxis so may have evaporated into a logic bomb.

Maybe it's in case kids think santa is hiding toys in a bin truck and climb in the back!

Isn’t there a programme on TV at the moment about H&S? Managed to catch a glimpse of a guy who was saying that you wouldn’t catch him standing under a hanging basket due to the H&S implications incase it fell!!!! There was also a guy rabbiting on about a knife in a bowl of washing up suds or something! No actually thinking about it, I think I saw it on Harry ‘Hill’s TV Burp’   [-X

Spot On

I used to be a H&S officer and have a couple of qualifications in the subject. It still irks when I hear the old H&S 'excuse' argument like this which is so obviously a load of old bull. No one seems to be able to undertake risk assesments these days just hazard identification.

Ask to see the risk assesment that has been carried out on the wearing of hats, festive or otherwise. If they can't they have no grounds under H&S to ask you not to wear it.

I think that a far more serious issue has been missed here.
If the gentleman who started this thread has been told that he cannot wear his santa hat at work due to health and safety reasons, then where does this leave Santa on Christmas eve?
Dear old Santa is going to set off from the north pole in his sledge which is capable of attaining a very high mach number wearing no more head protection than what is in effect a fancy bobble hat. This along with his apparent disregard for air traffic control procedures must raise serious health and safety issues

This is very true Merlin and one I had not thought of!

What happens if his hat blows off at mach speed and floats down and lands on a cars windscreen going along a motorway. Could be disasterous!

We were not allowed to display those flags either....... reason given - could fall / blow off and become a hazard. It sounds crazy but it only takes 1 flying off at the wrong time and .............................................. well I'll let you decide the outcome.

H&S will kill this country....!!!

Do you remember when the 'HSE' staff went on strike over pay & working conditions(!?!?!), & burnt their pay-slips.
Did no-one tell them that was dangerous, & had it been risk-assessed??

I'm glad no-one's told them Oxygen is actually poisonous to the human body, or they'd try to stop us breathing
(it is in pure, unadulterated, form anyway)

'Inspector Gadget' had a dig at the 'H&S' nightmare too, in his book 'Perverting The Course Of Justice'

All I want is a cup of tea. I have served this nation for the best part of two decades, both at home and abroad.
I don't want medals and I don't want more money, I just want some tea.

But I can't have a cuppa because electric kettles are prohibited in my workplace.
Our health and safety department has banned them in case we kill ourselves by electrocution, burning or drowning

The weird thing is, when Saturday comes, and I'm facing a dozen drunken, violent and dangerous yobs outside the taxi rank in the High Street, with only three PCs and a guardian angel on my side, our health and safety officers are nowhere to be seen.

Kettles and electric fans - too dangerous!
Tackling 250lb of screaming, tattooed men when you're armed only with a 50g tin of pepper spray which doesn't work and an aluminium stick??
You carry on, Officer......

Given that I work in the NHS, & we have a veritable 'united nations' of creeds/colours/religions/nationalities, I have never heard of anyone declaring they're offended by it (unless he/she is wanting to wind management up..............)

I've told management the decorations offend me too, as I despise this (allegedly) 'festive' season, but every year I get told I'm just being silly :x

Perhaps I should tell them I've joined the religious group of 'Parsimony & Prudence' & see what they say ;)
