WARNING if you have NFU insurance...
« on: December 08, 2008, 10:24:24 »
Just tried to get a quote for my Surf with the NFU but was told if the vehicle is used a lot off road their policy will become invalid, I said "ok so it is not then" but she said if I had an accident on the road and they saw it was dirty had a winch (declared) and mud terrains (declared) they would consider NOT paying out!

CRAZY!!!

Bizarre, isn't it? National Farmers Union won't insure a vehicle for the use it's intended for. So what do farmers do when they have a winch equipped 4x4 and want to use it on someone elses land?

I can understand the likes of Direct Line or other mainstream insurance companies not liking off road use, but you would expect the NFU to understand.

Would it be possible to have some clarification on what was said by the NFU office?

If a vehicle is being used off-road (on other than a vehicular right of way) - then usually it isn't insured at that time (this would apply to pay and play sites etc). But once it gets back on the road, all should be fine and dandy and you're insured again.

Are the NFU really saying that if you venture off-road it invalidates your insurance permanently? Shocking if that is the case!

But what about if you're on a green lane and on a side slope a Land Rover takes a bit of a tumble causing a dent down one side?

AFAIK a green lane is classed as part of "The Queen's Highway" isn't it?

That's a bit scary really as I was considering a quote from NFU on my Disco as my current insurer want £2,500 as I'm going to be starting a fresh policy on my own pretty soon, I was on my own before but to start with I had my 416 insured with eCar and was paying £1,600 for it then when the 416 was wrote off my dad loaned me his wagon (the Disco...now mine!) and because I only changed the details it came to an extra £53(ish) on top of my old quote...but because I'm going to be starting a new policy with the Disco they've decided to rape me!

Any ideas on who is good for a young driver (nearly 23) on a Disco 2.5 200TDi with a 2" lift, 31x10.50R16 tyres, snorkel, heavy duty steering bars, etc?
200TDi Discovery
+2" Bearmach blue springs, +2" ProComp ES9000 Shocks, 31x10.50R16 Colway MT's, Heavy Duty steering arms, Safari snorkel, Midland CB radio, Extended bump stops, fully chequer plated rear.

Soon to have:
Full length roof rack, more lights than you can shake a stick at, +2" spacers, 2" lowered twin shock turrets, dislocation cones all round, Heavy duty bumpers. Possibly bigger tyres (Much bigger!!!) and more than likely body lifts etc.

NFU use different offices call one and they tell you something, call another and they tell you something else completely different !

Things they told me in the past include, Not covered for "greenlaning", not covered if I've competed in a trail, not covered if I join a response group. This from an insurance company whose office which once sponsered an ALRC club !, and meant to be covering "farmers" who often get "muddy vechicles", compete in "trails" and drive "greenlanes".

Most of the time reckon make it up as they go, along finaily give up with them when a fellow club member got his 17 year old son who was still a learner on a named policy but refused me (with son) us couple of weeks later, asked them why and told they had made a mistake in accepting cover for those under 21 without a full lience.

On a similar note thats what they told us, I asked a specfic question "was I covered for travelling to and from a MSA event and took part in a RTV trail" explaining what a RTV trial was. Was told if I ever took part in such a trail as a competior and later on the way home had an accident, i won't be covered (except RTA cover) because I had taken part and might have damaged the vechicle. Upon questioning them further on this point tried to get an answer when would I be able to have full cover again, told each case would be considered on its merits - typicial insurance industry get out.

Must point out here still covered under RTA so not committing any criminal offence.

So to answer your question seems it might

So assume that was 3 years ago, things change as have a few kids. One company quite happy for 1 year, then the next withdraw cover for those under 21 on renewal.

Things change

The only stipulation NFU put on my insurance, was that the winch was for self recovery only and motorsport events would not be covered. Part from that, they don't seem to mind about the mods.

I'm with the NFU too (via 'Coy & Nobles' at Honley, Huddersfield)

I've not been given/told of any exclusions/conditions about my cover since my time with them

But....
I did receive an interesting letter with my renewal though; pointing out that some policies don't cover the driving of other vehicles (not owned by the insurer) under the 'Third Party Cover Only' clause

Now I'm not sure whether this is a NFU issue only, or a cross company issue??, might be worth checking your own policies - if you do drive other peoples vehicles under this clause

I have a policy with Admiral.

The only specific exclusion is no cover for any use of the Nurbugring.
Anyone trying to lap the 'Ring in a Fourtrak is almost certainly clinically insane and banned from driving on medical grounds.

I'm curious as to how you started the discussion with NFU to find this out, did they volunteer the bit about off road not being covered or do you have previous claims history for off-road accidents ?
Watch out theres a tigger about!

Clarification, I heard it from the Alton Office of NFU.

I had several LONG conversations with them and the Alton branch manager, they say that obviosly they don't cover you at an off-road site but the fact you use it at one puts strain on the vehicle with gives a higher risk of something breaking and causing damage on the way home when they are covering you!

They said it has been their policy for ages??

Interesting cause i've too had quite a few long chats to NFU reps over the years and this very thing was pointed out too us, yet when I asked where is this written down they could'nt direct me to it but claim its an "industry standard."

So I asked another broker (not NFU) and he said if you use any vechicle in such a manner to cause increased risk of damage which might result in an accident later you won't be covered.

Then I tried to get so claification from an ALRC/MSA trails club if I took part in a RTV and what if ? after. Told to shut up and not mention it.

Also asked about "greenlaning" told since they were legal roads it would be OK as long as I did'nt increase the risk, ie did'nt "push" it. He also pointed out in an ordinary car on tarmac this guideline applies, you drive the car in such a manner as to increase risk of damage, ie rev hard the engine, spin the tyres, put pressure on the drive train and an accident occured because of your neglect you might not be covered. However they normally pay out 3rd party damage so you should be covered under RTA act.

Easy if your invloved in an accident, some insurance companies investgate it afterwards, i believe those which are costly claims and about 1/3 of all others, with the interent it don't take long to check a club website and see the results of a trail posted.

I've also been told 25% of claims are rejected thats a very high fiqure.
