110 vibrating at speed

Following on from this thread, I have a problem with my 110.

At first I thought it was a misfire, but now I'm convinced it is not.  It vibrates at speed (it feels like you are driving over the rumble strips on the motorway hard shoulder).  Everything is fine up to about 40mph, then it gets very bad up to 50 and then not so bad up to 70 (haven't been above 70).

It doesn't matter which gear you are in, but it does matter now much power you are putting down (this is why I thought it was an engine problem to start with).  Cruise at 45, and it is OK, but put the power down and you get the vibration.

I know my swivels were a bit dry (been meaning to top them up for ages) and I put some CV grease in them.  I can't tell if this has helped because at point I'm cold and fed up with it all but I *think* it has improved it (or that might just be wishful thinking).

Any ideas please!

Also, I live near J41 of the M6. Is there anyone passing by who could drop in and go for a drive, to see if they have any ideas?

Prop shaf?

It will probably only vibrate under pressure, hence the load thing...

On level ground, handbrake off, chock a wheel to stop it rolling away :)

If you grab the prop at each end, there should be NO movement up and down, left and right. There will be some radial play, but thats ok.

If it moves up down or left right, then the UJ has had it.

Only a tenner in parts, and about a few hours labour.

I'd be thinking props too.  Drop one off and put it in difflock, see if it improves.

Grab the shaft near the joint!

This is the bit thats broken, and this is me pushing the new bit in with a vice and a socket

When you do try lifting one wheel on the axle you are checking (housbricks under 2 other wheels) because I found mine wouldn't show any signs of wear with the slightest bit of wind up in the transmission.

i have a simular vibration at around the same speed i have changed both props,cvs and still no good then i thought it may be the head gasket when i changed it i notised i had 2 cracked pistons whitch i have yet to change. good luck

my series 3 has this kinda vibration, i'm pretty sure its the tracking

i changed my track rod, with new balljoints and adjusted it as best i could and the vibration reduced massively
its still there, i just need to get it checked professionally

My local garage has quoted £35 to replace a joint, if that is the problem.  With the temperature outside only just above freezing and the rain belting down, it is very tempting to get someone else to do it........

Just remember that there is 2 per prop, and 2 props!

Worse case youd need four - just bear that mind... @ £35 per joint, it could be expensive!

Well, I thought I'd have a go myself. 

It was the rear joint on the rear prop which was u/s.  I've taken the prop off............and taking it to my F-I-L's house tomorrow (he is a retired MOT tester) for him to replace the joint   :dance:

Finally got the prop back on this afternoon.  It had both of the joints replaced.

Took it for a test drive and all is OK!

Actually, I do still have a slight vibration between 50 and 60mph: it wasn't there before.  Aargh!  Any ideas what this might be?  Is it possible the UJ are not quiet centered within the prop?

first off its a land rover, so different tyres, springs, shocks, etc will affect the drive, i had the same on mine, it turned out to be the clutch, Valeo (italian for cr*p) clutches have a nylon centre which break up, this gives a virbration.

Did you check all the Ujs, or did you check them, found the worn one and replace it and forgot the others? Check all the UJs again, grease them and check if there is loads of play in your front swivel pins housings as well, as these are easily adjusted by removing shims.

I (well, my FIL) replaced both UJs at each end of the rear prop.

Stupid question coming up: when you say grease them, where exactly do you mean?   The UJ itself?  Just slap some grease on?

It only vibrates at about 55mph: 5mph either side of that, and all is well.

There should be a grease nipple on the actiually spider of the UJ which can be greased using a grease gun. One witha flexible hose is best.
