black ice = written off disco
« on: December 17, 2008, 11:04:09 »
just had the morning from hell - hit a patch of black ice when turning into a country lane & went into an audi , not sure what happened next but then found we were in a hedge.

insurance company are saying damage + age of disco = write off.

very unhappy , but fortunately the girls, the lady i hit and  me are all uninjured, just badly shocked.

The main this is that everyone is ok, cars can be replaced, people cant!

Depending on what they give you for the disco you should be able to replace it quickly enough, they are going for next to nothing at the moment.

Glad you are all OK Ella, but how old is sonar?

A friend of mine 'wrote off' his disco last year on black ice (P reg 300tdi) - was given a pay out by the insurance and then he bought it back for much less than the payout as a category D write off. He had to get the repairs done which were nothing more than a bit of panel replacement and get it MOTd before he could drive it again but it's just as it was before. He plans to drive it into the ground as the value is next to nothing now it's a CatD. But it might be an option for you.

Glad you are all OK.

It's a "write off" simply becasue it's cheaper to pay out than to fix it, as we all now the value of V8 Discos isn't at it's highest and your insurance company will be looking at trade in values of average mileage vehicles, being an import won't help either.  If it's still lowmileage it might be worth fixing up but it will never be worth that much.

Is it still driveable?

Hi,

having been back this arvo for the recovery truck, had a good look at the damage and it is nowhere as bad as i thought it was (due to the emotional shock this morning).  the girls are both fine with no injuries apart from being upset about the disco.

it does look like it could be repairable, but i think the ins co will consider it 'beyond economical repair' - we will look at buying it back if they write it off - if anyone has a spare D2 front bumper, drivers side wing, bonnet  and headlights hanging around in the garage that they don't want - let me know!!!  we probably won't bother putting the bull bar back on.

geoff always wanted a project (apart from redesigning the front and back garden, redoing the bathroom etc) and it looks like this could be it!

As long as the chassis is ok then it's a matter of cosmetics but I don't think he'll find it much of a challenge somehow.

Even better...i managed to hit our own wall when i swung into the driveway and didnt realise it was still icy!
Managed to rearrange the front bumper and bullbars, and the wall is still standing but somewhat wobbly....

Hope you get yours sorted Ela....i was lucky and managed to straighten it out with the aid of another LR and a couple of ropes. The scars and scrapes live on.
