Oh my god, this story just came up on bbc news
« on: December 17, 2008, 17:51:19 »
  http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/england/lincolnshire/7788278.stm

My sincere condolences go out to the whole family who have had to deal with so much already, any charges brought by taking the case to court to can never compare to the pain of losing a child, let alone 4.

What a tragedy

Especially at this time Nigel will need all the support we can give to him and his family.

At approx 1Minuit into the recording, it states  "that the brake calipers were out of adjustment"  Can anyone on here explain how to adjust the calipers, as it beats me. Every caliper that i have worked on, a Land Rover ,is self adjusting when you pump the brake pedal first time after working on them. I think the officer doesn't know wot he is talking about(brake wise)unless he means the rear drum brakes if it had them.

my thoughts are with the family
I wonder whether this will have an impact on all landrover/4x4 owners who do their own maintenance and modifications to their vehicles and will the powers that be look differently upon us maybe with more stringent mot,s or roadside checks :-k

Not based on a single incident, but if there are examples of others it would add up to that sort of action.

Problem we have here is that many Mud Clubbers are close to the individuals concerned and it's difficult for us to understand some of the comments as most of them are too brief, especially about brakes etc. Suffice to say the HSE bods will have done a tooth comb job on the Land Rover and I suspect there will be a substantial report around to explain details about brakes etc.

Very sad. We can just hope it is resolved in a fitting manner for all concerned.

I think a big part of the prblem is reporters who don't have a clue what they are talking about.  Yesterday I heard on the news that his car had 2 differnet callipers on the fornt, and parts from more than 5 different cars, today it's turned into even worse gobledegook but as long as we can wave fingers at another 4x4 owner.

Whatever happened to the alleged minibus driver involved int he same incident? at what point did it stop being a LR that had slid sideways down a banking and become a 4x4 that had lost control whilst driving dangerously and plunged into the water?

This has happened to one of our community, a good friend to some here and it's right that we offer our support.  What the wider issues are for all of us in light of this case, time may tell.

My understanding is that the CPS must have have decided to take this to court ?
Now correct me if I`m wrong but how does bringing this case to court be in the public interest ?
Also the CPS also have to have enough evidence to get a conviction. Unless I`m missing something or there is more to this story " Where is the evidence ?".
Mind you the CPS take the most stupid of cases to court and waste tax payers money !
As you may well have guessed I don`t have much faith in the way the police and CPS behave

I really feel for this guy,not only has he lost his children but has gone through a court case aswell.
The stress he must be under  :'(
I just hope that people close to him give him the care and support he needs [-o<

to start off im not here to pass judgement, i think everryone should leave the family alone, and that police spend far too much time sat at desks.
but having read this story and related articles on the bbc news website, the vehicle had defects,
one of which is stated as having a larger brake caliper on offside front to the one on the nearside. this would surely affect braking?
and corrosion to the underside of the chassis, near the axle mounts. common pboblem on all landrovers, but still a dangerous defect.

like i said, not passing judgement because ive owned/driven some of the worst examples.
just trying to put a little clarity to the questions.

i hope he does not get a custodial sentance, the mans suffered enough already.

As some of you on here know I atteneded this RTA along with 4 other colleagues and the scene still haunts me.

If we have learned anything from this it is to make sure that our vehicles are road worth and we drive them carefully.

Thats all i have to say... Its one of thoes incidents that will stay with me for ever!

If want to walk it walk it, if you want to ride it ride it just leave me alone to drive it!

Unfortunately there appears to have been enough "wrong"  with Gresh's vehicle for the investigators to really get into it.

According to the reports the chassis was from an F reg vehicle but the vehicle was running on J plates, The tyres on the back were over size and under inflated (they dont mention the front!) the front braked pulled badly to the side due to a bigger caliper on one side (quite how you get two different calipers on I don't know) These things will get the police looking very closely at a vehicle.

I don't think its fair to complain about the police here, all they do is investigate and submit a report, its the CPS that make the call and they really are a law unto themselves!!!

I fail to see why this is in the public interest? All I can think is it was driven by the other people (I believe he and his partner have split up!!)

I really feel for him and his surviving kids, this is the last thing they need.

Yes, Gresh has lost a lot but would we be as sympathetic if it were some chav that had modded a nova and killed half of his family? Somehow I doubt it.

It is a salutory lesson to all of us who do our own servicing and repairs

I think that Mud-Rat might well be right in this particular instance.

This is clearly an emotive subject, and I think we should all take care to consider the thoughts of others.

My sympathies go out to Gresh and his family, whatever the details he is entitled to that much.

Now, I'm going to lock this thread before somebody gets upset, I can't see anyone adding anything to the conversation which will help any.
