That dreaded 'Limp' mode

It's back, the two flashing green lights that put the disco into limp mode. Last time it happened a month or two ago I took it to the local dealer to diagnose with his testbook but it had cleared itself and there was no fault showing on testbook???. He's offered to test it next time it happens so if its still there in the morning it's down to the dealer.

BUT I'm starting to think it's either a faulty ECU or a faulty sensor that is sending a message to the ECU to engage Limp Mode. If the latter what could it be - is there a list of fault conditions that result in the ECU engaging Limp Mode?

I get this occasionally - especially if I'm attempting to 'shunt' into a parking space, and change from drive to reverse a bit quick.............it then makes parking a right PITA, as the auto box defaults to 3rd, and the changes get really fierce. An engineering reboot cures it (engine off/on  ;))........it just looks like you stalled it though !!!

My Disco has done 117000 miles, the gearbox oil and filter has been changed at the prescribed times, I'm guessing that it's just getting a bit worn somewhere  :roll:

Thanks Jim, mine doesn't 'reboot' when you turn the engine off and on again, just keeps flashing. It was doing so the following morning when I just turned the ignition to the aux position. So I phoned the dealer to see if they were able to link it up the the test book. Long story but answer phone and wrong mechanic meant the ignition was on for a few minutes before I actually turned the engine on, at which point the lights stopped flashing???. So no point taking it to the dealer again.

Am wondering if leaving it on aux for a while allows it to rectify itself by identifying whatever kicked it off was not actually a problem any more.

We shall see.

It's possible.  Also most engine mamagement can only log so many faults, perhaps it will forget after a few days/weeks/trips out.

Hope so, problem is it is stuck in 3rd gear whilst in limp mode
