Slighty toasted Landrovers
« on: December 23, 2008, 09:16:39 »
Scumbag neighbours shed caught fire (probably because they where dossing in it!). My defender was parked up alongside and my Series 1 was close by too. Was alerted and managed to move the defender at pretty much at the point is was starting to get scorched, another minute and it probably have been lost.

Haven't been out to check this morning, but all I could see last night was that the snorkel melted a bit and the spare wheel cover is now shrunk wrapped around the spare :cheesy:

The series1 had to be left to fend for itself, it got rather hot, again haven't been out to check in daylight but I think the fire service got there and sprayed it over (lots of steam!) before the paint started bubbling, it was about 5 foot away from the shed.

The whole area is covered in asbestos now. The brigade suited up and cleaned up a lot of it, and washed down my defender for me.

I take it they will pay for the damage as it was their shed that went up... and to be fair they don't catch fire for no reason.

Perhaps there was a still in it!

Every thing seems okay with landrover except the snorkel and tyre cover on the defender. The gardens are sectioned off awaiting a hand picking team to clear rest of asbestos. Environmental agency posted a letter asking for access and scene of crime fire investigator been taking photographs today.

My theory is persons who are not supposed to be officially staying in the house where hiding/sleeping/smoking in shed while awaiting the weekly visit from the Landlord. Other neighbours say they seen people going in there to sleep at night recently. We have had a long history of issues with that household of scumbags

Best keep your pride and joy as far away as possible then, and under lock and key.  I'm told their countrymen have taken over the drug dealing in a nearby town.........

Seems you had a lucky escape. You should be able to claim on their third party liability cover on their house insurance - assuming they have it, of course.

Try and get a letter from the fire service or Police to confirm that the vehicles were damaged as a result of the fire. Some insurance companies try to wriggle out of things like that - happened (twice) to a mate of mine whose 'bike was scorched and melted by a nearby fire.

Hope you get it sorted  :)

 Their insurance adjusters are saying we can't claim from their insurance because the landlord was not to blame for the fire

Our household doesn't cover them. The defender got a large excess which is not worth bothering to make a claim for that hassle and the series1 is stored offroad and no with insurance of its own anymore.

I can't believe that, it can't be right? I am expected to suffer a lose from no fault of my own due to a neighbours misfortune.

Small claims court I guess.

I would assume that if the insurance doesn't cover it, the landlord would still be liable. Failing that, the tenants would be.

I would have expected the landlord to have public liability insurance to cover such eventualities. Have you spoken to your insurance company for advice? You won't be the first person to be in this situation and they might be able to advise.

The worst case is you have to issue a claim in the county court (AKA 'small claims' court) for the cost of repairing the damage - but there's no guarantee that, even if the court finds in your favour, you'll get the money.

Fingers-crossed for you...
