Waterproofing???
« on: December 28, 2008, 13:17:57 »
Is there any way of properly preparing a Landy and parts for water n mud??

I've managed to fill my alternator twice now with mud!! Whenever I go off road i'm generally (within reason ) quite careful and try not to go anywhere I think I might get quite stuck as apart from mud tyres, I haven't (at the moment) got any other form of off road equipment. Just wondered if there is any way of waterproofing alternators, or any other parts that don't appreciate being covered in mud like I do :D

Cheers in advance for any help..... Jen :D

Hi Jen, I cannot speak for the alternator, as touch wood mine has been through some fine fettle of muddy places and is OK, maybe the fording cleans it out, but for the starter motor I have had 3 in the last 12 months, OK one was a faulty solenoid, but I don't understand howcome there are no waterproof options available, even just a waterproof seal on the shaft would help.

The starter on a D90 200Tdi is a PITA to change, I am now hoping someone comes and tells me there is an option, please [-o<

The Click is the Solenoid (kind of a big relay) allowing the power in to the Starter Motor from the battery, this then shoots the stater pin forward which engages the flywheel to turn the engine over, if you sometimes get a delay I think this maybe the starter sticking a little due to S&C that has built up, unfortunately they don't usually get better

Not really much you can do for the alternator apart from giving it a good pressure wash straight after your offroading. Leave it any longer the mud goes hard & starts wreaking brushes, bearings etc. As for the starter I took mine apart & reassembled using silicone sealant to seal the joins.

What you replacing with? Cheap Chinese/britpart starter motors have gaping holes in them for rapid water ingress, try and replace with a 2nd hand OEM part, Bosch is the better one, should be about £50.00 from a landrover breaker.
