disco 200tdi in a td 90
« on: December 30, 2008, 20:41:30 »
hi i was wondering if someone would have some advicefor me.
I got a cheap disco 200tdi it was an mot failure (needs a lot of welding on the chasis) but the engine runs well and does not smoke or leak.
I wanted to put the 200tdi in my turbo diesel 90 will if fit and is it truly wise move.
I have heard its a good engine in the 90 with more torque and better mpg is this true.
If and one can help i will be truly greatfull
mike

two things for thought i dont think the link covers is 1 swap fly wheel, engine back cover over from your td lump you got to shave of a dowl on new engine then it fits straight on, and to make life better for you can buy the down pipe all done for you they are on e bay

You don't need to swap flywheels. If you want to just bolt the gearbox straight on, then either alter the 200TDi flywheel housing, or put the TD one on the new engine (it's a straight swap). There is still one stud that has to be removed though.

Don't you require a different down pipe because of where the turbo sits???????

I did this conversion last year & performance is greatly improved. Used exhaust & intercooler pipe kit from parkers which were expensive at the time, but prices in their recent ads seem to be quite a bit cheaper. They do make a very tidy job when finished though.

The downpipe is the awkward bit. You can buy the Steve Parker conversion, fabricate your own, or cut a chunk out of the footwell. In the conversion I did in the link above, I didn't want to hack the bulkhead about and wanted to just connect the downpipe to the rest of the TD system (it is a narrower bore though). If you opt to make your own downpipe, then you have to make gas flow as unrestricted as possible, so smooth curves and as shallow as you can make them are very important.
Back pressure from a sharp bend or corner won't have a noticeable effect at lower revs, but the engine will rev out higher up and speed will be reduced.
