this is odd just been out looking at temp problem 1, found the y peace on the flow  part of pipe to top of rad and exspantion tank blocked so i unblocked it put it back, then found that thermostat not opening good so as temporay bit i i ripped the iners out of stat so i still had sealing ring put it all back bled it etc and for a moment as i reved engine temp gauge shot down to cold let revs of it came back up reved it again and the same happend it this a couple more times then shot up to just about 3/4 but the engine feels normal

No, the former is an 82 stat, the latter is an 88 stat. It can cause problems if the wrng thermostat is put in.

Someone I know had a 200tdi with a 300 (88) stat in it, and it used to overheat. Soon as I put a 82 stat in it, the temp sat at halfway and wouldn't go higher.

my 200's always had 88 stats in and never had over heating problems even with no fan and missing most the fins in the rad.
both times ive bought stats, the books say 88 for 200
