i passed in 86 i think . old type liscence . just moved house so got to apply for a passport type . will i still keep the same classes  ?. alan,,,,

Make sure you get a photocopy of your existing license before you send it off to DVLA. If they screw up and remove a category you have to produce evidence of entitlement - they don't have it!

One of our local IAM examiners (Class A police driver) lost his motorbike license because of this and had to re-sit the test. Even a letter from the Chief Constable couldn't sway DVLA into just putting the category back on the license.

Forewarned is forearmed :-)

I took my test back in 1987 in 2" of snow. The tested advised me to 'take my time' when we did the emergency stop.

I passed in 2004, so i don't have anythink major. I did speak to dvla about towing a trailor & she said "I can tow a trailer, as long as the towing vehicle is a greater weight than the trailor and whats on the trailor. The combined maximum weight 3.5tons with an exception of 750kg which makes it 4250kg. I have asked her to send me some information confirming this, so i will post a copy of the information when i receive it.

Info on trailers (if you can work it out).

I know I (passed test in 1982) can drive a vehicle + trailer with a total MAM of 8.25 tonnes.

Well i had a look at the site and this is what i found out:-

Car licences obtained on or after 1 January 1997

If you passed a car test on or after 1 January 1997 you're limited to vehicles up to 3.5 tonnes maximum authorised mass towing a trailer up to 750kgs, or a vehicle and trailer combination up to 3.5 tonnes MAM providing the MAM of the trailer doesn't exceed the unladen mass of the towing vehicle. You will need to pass an additional driving test in B+E if you wish to tow a caravan or trailer combination which exceeds these weight limits.

Neither was I! Passed my test in 1995 according to my licence.

I passed in 2004, so i don't have anythink major. I did speak to dvla about towing a trailor & she said "I can tow a trailer, as long as the towing vehicle is a greater weight than the trailor and whats on the trailor. I have asked her to send me some information confirming this, so i will post a copy of the information when i receive it.

Glad I didn't have to take this test! Basic rule of thumb when it comes to weight is "the unladen weight of the towing vehicle must be more then the laden weight of the vehicle being towed." You then have to concider engine power to weight being towed. Be careful, it is easy to think that you are legal when you are not.

Thankfully yes, otherwise I wouldn't have been able to drive the 101, or the minibuses at work, or tow a trailer.  (101 was 5.5 tonnes.)

There is a big part of the country that don't have a licence. Just don't get court.. No licence then more than likely they don't have insurance.

My granddad had a driving license that allowed him to drive any vehicle, I remember seeing it, it really did say any vehicle.
Doubt if anyone here is old enough to have one of those though.
