Peugeot 306 advice please

Hello all,

My folks have had the same 1988 Ford Granada for 18 years and now it is time for a change. A friend has found a 2002 Peugeot 306 estate 1.6 petrol auto, two owners, VGC, FSH, 37,000 miles for £2,000 ono.

I know nothing about Peugeots so could anyone please tell me if this is a good car for a good price? What sort of MPG could they get?

I have had a 306 and two 307s, great cars, very reliable and parts are easy to get, #2k is a bit much for a 1.6 petrol, the 1.9 or 2.0 diesels are so much better and more reliable and economical. The HDI or turbo diesel engine is superb. For that money you could get 02 plate 307s with higher mileage, but with service history. In the last 7 years of owning a peugeot, apart from servicing i have had nothing wrong with em. Others may tell you different, but i really rate them.

I had a 306 diesel turbo 1.9 and that was returning about 55mpg. Great car. Sad it had to go.

Hi,

himself runs a pug 406 1.8 petrol rapier saloon (sedan) and i run a pug 407 1.6 hdi diesel wagon (estate) - the diesel is much nippier and does about 10 miles extra to the gallon & seems overall a better beastie.

just our opinions on the 2 engines!

dont do it mate,i work on them regular,auto gearbox on a 1.6 petrol will thirsty,crap gearbox,it wont be as new,but look for a diesel turbo one,far better a 306 1.9 td,hdi are ok,but have known them to crack heads,and electronic injectors can also be a problem :-k

Its too expensive, do they really need an auto?
The diesel is a much better car, why nor go for a 406?
My 406 diesel 7 seater estate is the Best £700 I have ever spent

Thanks for the advice.  The owner has dropped his price, still wants £1,850 for it though.....

Look at this one on eBay: Same model and colour but one year older and 13,000 more on the clock and already at £1,550 so maybe £1,850 is fair.........?

Thanks for your input (and everyone else's): I agree the diesel could well be better but my folks don't do many miles per year (last year it was around 2,000).  I've also had others say the petrol is OK, so I'm just not sure what to do really.

Thanks, that does help.

So the D-Turbo is no cheaper to run than the petrol (as diesel is about 13ppl more than petrol).  The HDi would be cheaper to run, but all the ones I can find have been to the moon and back and still cost more.

Echo that, loved the 306 1.9 diesel I had, was slow on occasions as it had no turbo, but a fabby little car... MPG wise was getting about 55..

I have a 306 dturbo love it it handles like it's on rails and the torque's brilliant didn't want the hdi to much electronic rubbish!!! :lol: :lol:

Had a Citroen ZX 1.9D (your car's weird half-sister with the same engine), great first car. Would be a bit gutless now but it had a good balance of enough power to learn to handle it but not enough to get into serious trouble. Plus the engine had a wonderful ability to crawl at tickover, which got me up a few icy hillclimbs.

Well, I spoke to my folks and they don't want a diesel, full stop, so we have gone ahead with this motor.
