i think i have the most rotten 1997 disco arround
« on: January 05, 2009, 23:52:43 »
Where can I start first i had to do the wheel bearings then a rear caliper siezed up then the starter went then the  water pump went i just put a rear door hinge on as that broke and i checked the rear floor and had to put some plates on and on doing the hinge i can lift the body from the chassis so i looked at the rear cross member and the body mounts is just not attached to the body the rear cross member is no longer there i still have to do the front out riggers and inner and outter sills and to top it all off i think i have a problem with the rear axle as when i jack it up the wheels are turning on their ownand spinning backwards i think it could be due to lack of maintance as I was told by a land rover dealer and been well abused and kept in to much water and not had time to dry out i will take pics as i go and hope i can get it all done by the end of the month or by mid feb

From my little experience i have learnt about disco's, i would say check the sills, rear arches, Seat belt points (rear), boot floor. etc> They seem to be abit of a nightmare but once the work is done and done properly it should last you another 10 years.. good luck mate. you will find more and more the further you go through it.

That is shocking!!! I thought my 200 was bad (we had to put a plate on either end of the rear X member, and one on the back of each of the sills and rebuild the inner wings!!!

If it helps any mine was worst than this. Mind you mine is a 1993! Started welding at one corner and worked my way around took me best part of two weeks solid to weld it up. Mine did have to have inner sills as the rear body mounts had fell off. My cross member was worst than yours all though it was still connected at the body mounts. I patched the rear cross member up to get an MOT and have been using for about 8 months now. I decided that next mot it really needed replacing as the door was catching it and the stay bracket broke off leaving a hole in it. Only think is I had a stroke in October so somebody else is doing it for me. Don't like letting others loose on in but needs must at the moment.

heres some pics of mine

this is my boot floor replacement
http://www.mud-club.com/forum/index.php/topic,54605.0.html

Heres a quick low down on all the places i found rust

it was a suprise every time, im slowly fighting it away, some people have told me to scrap it but i love it far too much to do that but now its probably stronger than its ever been

rear cross member

re-welded then put a 5mm thick aluminium plate over the top so i can jack off it

the passenger footwell and front arches were shagged, grind out the old in with the new

disintegrated front body mounts

cut the old out in with the new

Looking good mate. I had the choice between doing that to mine or breaking it. I hate welding even though I end up doing it all the time so I broke it. Wish I hadn't now!
