Taxing a SORNed motor

Following on from this thread......

I need to collect a second hand car which my parents have bought.  I need to get the train to where it is then drive it to my folks (then train home).  The car has the V5 present, and is MOTed but is currently SORNed.

My folks will get it insured, and I will have the cover note with me.  What do I need to do to get tax for it on the day I collect it?  Can I go into the local Post Office with the MOT, V5, insurance and payment or do I need anything else?

Yep, should just need the mot & V5, they will post the change of address for you, & valid Insurance cover note or Certificate.

If you insure it before the day you pick it up you could also tax it on line

Get a trailor mate, then you can deal with the tax etc after..

Just been trying to tax a sorn'd vehicle and due to the move we have lost the documents etc.... When I called the DVLA about it to see if I could tax it online... I was told that I would not be able to drive the car on the road for 5 days even if the tax disc arrived before the 5 days were up.... Needless to say I will paying them 25 for replacement documents and taxing it at the postoffice...

If you tax a SORNed car you can't do it online, I've tried.  As far as I'm concerned though if the tax is payed, I'm driving it.  You can only tax a SORNed car on the last day of the month, or pay for the whole of the current month.

28th of the Month you can tax it to start the beginning of the next month, or at least thats what she says in the post office when i buy untaxed cars!

Actually, I'll correct myself: you don't need to take the MOT with you any more because it is all on the computer.

The post office dont have access to the computter..... you need the mot  ;) you were right first time  :-#

If you tax online you get 5 days allowed for postage where you dont have to display the disc, but as said, the disc is sent to the current registered keeper

I taxed my Disco a couple of weeks ago, and I asked them (main PO in my local town) and they told me I didn't need to produce the actual MOT as it was all on computer......................

Went to Dudley after christmas to see Jess mum & dad, took money, mot and reminder to tax the van........ forgot insurance  :doh: so enquired if I could still tax it with them using computer........  :doh: no, we dont have access.
Another person in the queue had got the emissions readout instead of the mot and were told the same... NO..... :doh:

Rang DVLA and they say OK, when I queery the displaying disc laws they tell me that there has been an ammendment to allow 5 days for postage with exemption from having to display.  Good job as i was 70 miles from home on New Years Eve  [-o<

I am collecting the car on Thursday, and it has ben sold to me as SORNed.  However, I looked at the DVLA website last night and it said:

NOOOO DVLA TRAP............ AS SOON AS YOU GET THE V5 IN YOUR NAME RING THE DVLA AND SORN IT.

In practice, they send the fines for not re-taxing or declaring SORN six weeks after the tax expires.

However, if you're stopped by the Police and the vehicle is untaxed or, worse still, SORN'd then you could be in trouble. ANPR cameras are becoming more common.

You can drive an un-taxed and/or un-MOTed vehicle to/from a pre-booked MOT test or for pre-booked repairs only.

There's no such thing as an MOT on demand anymore anyway, probably to stop people saying they were on their way.  The MOT has to be booked in before it can be started and the DVLA know straight away, the police can also see what your car failed for.

Actually, the garage up the road from us still does "on demand" MOT tests. Reason I know, I took a friends car yesterday, without booking.

  Dudley post office are a waste of space.. I took my reminder there to tax my truck, after queuing for thirty minutes they wanted the mot cert.
 Fuming like a train I went home and phoned DVLA,  guess what.. go on guess.. they don,t need the mot its online for them...
  Chap said I should complain to head post master.
  I just went to Stourbridge  and taxed it there  no problem.

No, because DVLA local offices do not do tax disc renewals.

However, if you need a DVLA inspection (e.g. for an imported vehicle) then yes you can - providing the inspection is pre-booked (which it will be). A friend of mine quite legally drove to the Oxford VRO with no tax, MOT or registration plates - but he had insurance.
