Following on from this thread......I need to collect a second hand car which my parents have bought. I need to get the train to where it is then drive it to my folks (then train home). The car has the V5 present, and is MOTed but is currently SORNed.My folks will get it insured, and I will have the cover note with me. What do I need to do to get tax for it on the day I collect it? Can I go into the local Post Office with the MOT, V5, insurance and payment or do I need anything else? Thanks!
If you insure it before the day you pick it up you could also tax it on line

OK thanks, but I can walk into the local Post Office with V5/insurance/MOT/payment and walk out with a tax disk though, can't I?
If you tax a SORNed car you can't do it online, I've tried. As far as I'm concerned though if the tax is payed, I'm driving it. You can only tax a SORNed car on the last day of the month, or pay for the whole of the current month.

How do you know? :D
OK, ignore that post: it means it is SORNed until December this year.
Do you not get 14 days grace to tax a car now???
There's no such thing as an MOT on demand anymore anyway, probably to stop people saying they were on their way. The MOT has to be booked in before it can be started and the DVLA know straight away, the police can also see what your car failed for.Big brother is watching you ;)
Quote from: jjsaul on January 11, 2009, 14:01:17Do you not get 14 days grace to tax a car now???Officially, no. It's an offence to use a vehicle on the road without displaying a valid tax disc.In practice, they send the fines for not re-taxing or declaring SORN six weeks after the tax expires. However, if you're stopped by the Police and the vehicle is untaxed or, worse still, SORN'd then you could be in trouble. ANPR cameras are becoming more common. You can drive an un-taxed and/or un-MOTed vehicle to/from a pre-booked MOT test or for pre-booked repairs only.
Quote from: JumboBeef on January 12, 2009, 20:08:57How do you know? :DWell as you ask...... ;)Went to Dudley after christmas to see Jess mum & dad, took money, mot and reminder to tax the van........ forgot insurance  so enquired if I could still tax it with them using computer........ no, we dont have access.Another person in the queue had got the emissions readout instead of the mot and were told the same... NO..... :doh:Rang DVLA and they say OK, when I queery the displaying disc laws they tell me that there has been an ammendment to allow 5 days for postage with exemption from having to display. Good job as i was 70 miles from home on New Years Eve [-o<Steve
Fuming like a train I went home and phoned DVLA, guess what.. go on guess.. they don,t need the mot its online for them...
I taxed my Disco a couple of weeks ago, and I asked them (main PO in my local town) and they told me I didn't need to produce the actual MOT as it was all on computer......................
Can you drive it to a "local" DVLA office for taxing purpose??? Not that ours is very local, being 46miles away and I cant tax at a post office as I've lost my V5 and changed my address......
