Number plate
« on: January 14, 2009, 15:06:43 »
I know the letter font size and spacing are legally defined BUT...... can I chop the sides off as I have a 5 digit plate and am trying to fabricate a winch bumper and have run out of room

I need to crop about 2" off each side which would still leave a border and fit on my bumper  ;)

I would think so mate, the rear numberplate on a Rover 200 (I think its a 200) is an odd size and they are legal, so I would think so.

I think there is a minimum size required between the edge of the number/letters and end of the plate. Therefore a minimum plate size but not maximum (or if there is is a big one plate size) You may be thinking of the Rover 75 with the big rear plate.

I *think* the law is only really tight on post-2001 motors, so if you are before this, I wouldn't worry.

My 1991 Defender has a six digit reg and I cut down the front plate to fit a winch bumper more than four years ago, and so far, no problems!

Post 2001 top and side margins = 11mm
Pre 2001 top and sides margins = 13mm (group1) 11mm (group2)  (definition of groups?)

It's got the sizes of the margins here (most of the reg plate sellers got this detail and its on the DLVA site somewhere too :

http://www.plates4less.co.uk/FAQ/FAQ-New-AboutREG3.asp

Mines shortened to fit winch cover, passes MOT but that doesn't mean it's legal really, but I think it is.

That is exactly what I am planning  ;)
