I have now lost all respect for the British legal system. The judge is an ass.

I'm not surprised by this at all. I really feel sorry for this woman, who no doubt was up against some highly skilled barrister, who was able to twist everything that she said.
Its been the same for Police witnessses for years. If Police officers give accounts of an incident that all attended at, we 'got together and made it all up'.
It is a real shame as it destroys all faith in the system.
I recall the days when people who were arrested for disorder offences where kept in the cells overnight and put before the court, so the magistrates could see them in all their 'glory' from the night before, not several months down the line when they are all nicely polished up.
It does make me wonder why I carry on with my job, when I see the decent law abiding people let down time and time again, and the criminals walk away with a smirk on their faces.

As always, there's more to the story than is reported in the popular press. Tabloid justice isn't justice.

See this informative post from the Magistrate's Blog.

The media are forever equating justice to revenge - as is often seen by interviewing distressed and emotional victims. With the greatest of respect to them, they're not in a position to be fair, rational and impartial; they will want revenge.

We're now in a position where new laws are being drafted, often very poorly and with unintended consequences, as a knee-jerk reaction which politicians will hope curry favour with the electorate.

Too right - the government is tearing it apart in the quest for votes.

Why bother with impartial courts when the Police can be judge, juror and executioner?

It's worse than that. We now have trial by media. They might as well just make the editor of the Daily Wail Home Secretary and cut out the middle man. It wouldn't be that different...
