Helli Coiling?

Ok, can someone please explain to me how this works, i.e. whats done?

Am getting me head helli coiled where a spark plug has been previously cross threaded, and was quoted 1 hours labour plus the helli???

So am slightly lost now!

if im right m8 its drilled out then a thread like coily pice is put in to make a new thred hope it helps

You only do it because you have to but the nice bonus is that a helicoil in an alley casting is actually significantly stronger than the original thread.

An hour seems excessive though for somebody who knows what they are doing; half should be more than enough

I had a plug done on my old cavalier and he did it all while still on engine.  Still did 30k miles and was still going strong when I sold it  ;)

Well i have found a mechanic who is willing to try and do it while the head is still on!  So need to charge the battery tomorrow and hope it drives on Wednesday to get that done! lol

i have fitted heli coils at work with the head still on just put grease on the tap/drill bit to collect some of the swarf then blow down the spark plug hole with an airline.

Cool, he owns a couple of discoveries and when i worked at the car dealership we used to use him for our repairs so i know he can get it done!

I just cant wait to get the old girl back! lol

Good Forum use that; you learn a  bit and discover that with a  few more calls you save taking a head off!

It will take longer with the head in place but an hours labour is nothing if you save taking a head off

Well the original idea for doing it with the engine came on Friday night (hadnt seen HAW's reply) from v8seriesone (Dom) as he knows someone in Mold area that is a V8 guru!

Was gonna go down to him and stay overnight etc..... to get it done but found someone closer, so when i go down there now and stay overnight i can get drunk and go laning (not in that order obviously!) lol

TBH if I were taking the head off then I'd get all 4 done at once, if not both heads and all 8.  As said they are stronger than original but ublike cast in inserts they do not come loose on a hot casting because they are sprung.  Just make sure they use ones that can take the heat.

The cover for the rotary oil filter on the TD5 is only currently properly located by one screw as somebody has stripped the thread on the other one.  I'll need to helicoil that too I think.  Will need to be careful not to drop swarf in the filter housing I guess, but apart from that I'm hoping it'll be straightforward.  Another thing to add to the list.
