td5 or 300tdi economy
« on: January 23, 2009, 22:10:12 »
im thinking of buying a disco,so i can use it for green laning, and towing a trailer for an off roader, basically so i only run one motor on the road instead of two, just wanted to know what sort of economy you all get with either manual or auto 300tdi or td5 :-k

I must admit we have a 200tdi disco( i belive its the same engin as the 300tdi) and I am a steady 55-60 mile an our driver and getting 30+ to the gallon  this is standard truck excpt for colway mts on, but like any thing if you hammer them they will go down to 22mpg and the more modded they are the more weight so more fuel my m8s  is fully loaded wow one hell of a truck and with his strong right foot he gets 22 but if you sore it you would see why only 22 (Zebdee bright red)

Nope - the 200 and 300 are very different beasts. IIRC the only part shared between them is the conrods?

thanks for all your replys, although 30mpg is good,my passat will do 50mpg easy, but im thinking of the one tax and one insurance, mot etc,i think i will be saving in the long run,i'd be better off with a 200 or 300 tdi,td5 has to many things to go wrong for my liking ;)

My 200tdi used to do about 30-32mpg regardless of loading.

The TD5 (also manual) did about 28 max when I got it.  After lifting it, fitting bigger tyres and a roof rack I get about 24mpg.

As a rough rule of thumb expect 2-4mpg less from a TD5 than a 300tdi.

My 200tdi used to get 33mpg typically, and went as high as 37mpg on one occasion on a long steady run to north wales!!!! It dropped as low as 22mpg with a plant trailer carrying a series 109 on the back. A mates 300 with a fair few bits on it usually returns 30ish to the gallon.
