use axle stands

Hi all i hope noone do what i done today was jacked my land rover up to change front spring and swivel ball and took the wheel off and went to put a stand in place and it fell off the jack knocked me out for a few seconds and had a head ache for a few hours but my back is still killing me one lesson i learnt is to put the stands in before removing road wheels it has been the first time of have a car fall off a jack in 25 yrs of working on my own car  :) :)

A long time ago I received a complaint from a trolley jack purchaser. 

He said that after a few hours it crept down and he had to pump it back up to carry on working on the car.

After explaining what he was doing wrong and the number of serious injuries caused he did admit to being a fireman who had extracted bodies from under cars himself! :doh:

Very lucky.  I religiously put a the wheel under the car whenever I take one off.  If the worst happens it would be an injury only.

Glad your ok, well done for confessing as we all need reminders now and again.

That said im surprise your head diddnt go through ti with all that rush you have been talking about.

I got into the habit of using axle stands a long time ago and don't even think about it now;  I just get them out at the beginning of the job.  I think having self-levelling suspension (which gives the car the tendency to lower the suspension all on its own when you're working under it, particularly when you start jacking bits up and down or undoing things) acts as a handy reminder.  I always support the chassis when I'm working at the back end, and always lower axles / chassis / anything else jacked up onto the stands so there's no way it can fall off the jack.  That and I usually need the jack to lever something stubborn apart somewhere else!

I was surprised when I took my other car in recently to get an upper wishbone bush replaced and the garage (which is fairly new and doesn't yet have 2-post lifts) was working on all their cars on trolley jacks with no stands.

complacency is the biggest enemy here, we have all done it , just jacked up the vehicle quickly for a job thinking it will stay put while we work on it =; as thermidor says if you get the jack out get the axle stand out as well you were indeed very lucky

I'd get someone to take you up to A&E just in case you've got concussion - or at the very least, see your GP tomorrow. Don't drive yourself until you've been checked out in case you pass-out again.
