As I used to spend a lot of time near rivers and lakes as part of my job, I used to carry loads in ASBO.

Strops, winch extension, ground anchor, shackles, 20l of drinking water, MRE's, stove, kettle, tea bags, milk, sugar, waterproofs,  sleeping bag, hi ift jack, bottle jack, torch, flares / light sticks, 12v phone charger, spare batteries, old newspaper, matches (for starting a fire), spare clothes, spare boots, gloves, head torch, maps, hi - vis jacket, dry suit (not just for water, also keep you very warm), jump leads, shovel, tool kit, orange beacons always on roof and strobes (equally good at allowing people to find you than warning other people you are there), warning triangle, saw, crowbar, tyre lever and bead breaker, 12v compressor (on board) with air tank and tyre inflator, and I'm sure I have forgotten a few things.

Box of spares: fan belt, PAS belt, UJ's, wheel bearing kit, EP80-90, ATF / PAS fluid, 15w40 engine oil, spare bulbs, fuses, steering rod with track rod ends on it, brake clamp, electric tape, gaffer tape, zip ties, 16" inner tube, valve cores, rubber glue, patches.

bit hard if you're stuck in the middle of nowhere - either laning or in the snow..
we used to get funny looks off 'bobble hats' when we went laning, as we always took a cooker - and usually sat down to chicken curry - bombay potatoes etc for dinner - and a full english for breakfast.. has some nice comments from 'antis' usually - "any spare ?"Always one guy that went with us - all he used to take was 3 packets of crisps and as much crap from the 1st garage we passed - the used to lock himself in his series when we started cooking - never took coffe or tea either, so sat there dithering while we ate curry and had fresh tea  :D

My god, some of you guys are ready for apocalypse!

I've normally got a spade, ropes and shackles, water, bit of food, oil, jump leads, battery booster with work light, tool kit, air compressor and thats about it!

Although for some reason I took the BMW out in the snow today and all I have in there is a Tom Tom and a pair of gloves!

Hotcans are expensive but for me they are for Emergency use onlt not general food. Becuase cars like y Freelander are so complex there is little point carry spares so you are better of making yourself comfy until help arrives (in my mind). although maybe some WD40 and spare fuses and Bulbs is sensible.

BTW bought a stock of spare bulbs the other day, next day got in and the headlight had blown good job I had spares as it was 9.00pm sunday and I had a 200 mile journey ahead of me.

Wife and I used live one in Glasgow, one in Birmingham... so one or other of us was always travelling at weekends... as a result (and through prior military experience) I carry the following:

• Pick & Shovel (mounted inside back door so no space lost)
• Toolbox full of everything (well it feels like it when I take it out!)
• Spares box (fluids, sprays, greases, electrical bits and bobs)
• Assorted Strops, ropes & shackles
• Winch (On the front... nice and outta the way)
• Snatch block (for those difficult pulls)
• Hi-lift Jack (on spare wheel so easy to get to and no space penalty)
• Sleeping bag (small two season job)
• Softie jacket (Can't reccomend these enough! Military green/sand/black like a down filled jacket without the loft. VERY warm)
• Lidl (or was it Aldi?) £25 sailing jacket (Totally waterproof, huge collar to keep out the wind... perfick!)
• Various woolie hats
• Various gloves
• Two torches
• Mountaneering marker strobe (For when the torch batteries run out!)
• Ultra small gas stove & gas
• Mess tin (to boil the water!)
• Army 24hr ration pack (Can be eaten cold, breakfast, lunch & dinner with snacks and 3 litres of hot drinks in a small pack)
• Water (cuz yeah canny make a wet or a boil'n'thebag without it!)
• Decent 1st aid kit with three first field dressings and other stuff more useful than a plaster!)
• Emergency foil blanket x3 (for the numpties that think we are being over the top... then find out we aint!)

Most of this lives in the back and isn't disturbed, if I don't need it... great. However, in the past I've come across people who have fallen, vehicle accidents, young people unprepared for the weather etc and my kit has helped me to help them... so I'm happy.

The 110 has clothes and food for a week. Kitchen sink, cooker, tiolet and 20L of water. Oh and a double bed. There again it is a camper conversion  :shock:

My 90 has a change of clothes (for the people in her), all my recovery gear, a full toolkit, a cooker, 5L of water, canned food to last 3 people for 24 hours, plates, cooking kit, cutlery, 2 complete sets of wheel bearings, fan belt and a manual. In there all the year round so we can 'just go' when we want to.

* How long are typical jump leads?

Mine pair aren't exactly typical at 7m long, made of 35mm² welding cable with 600 amp clamps on the ends, but everyone i've see offering a jump start insists on parking their vehicle so close that you can't get between the vehicles to reach the batteries. Maybe I'm just abnormal.
