« on: February 03, 2009, 15:39:08 »
im after some hollow rectangular section ive tryed everywhere all i can find on ebay is stainless steel which i dnt want .

i need it to weld on as passenger sill as ive cut the whole thing off my disco ? ive managed to get a piece to do the drivers side but now im stuck and cant finish the passanger side .

 well im after ideally :  90mm x 50mm x 4mm wall and about 2mtrs long ?

but if i cant get that size   :  100mm x 50mm x 3-4 mm wall should be just as good ?

Best looking at your local suppliers to be honest. Try a google search along the lines of "steel suppliers wigan" or have a look in the yellow pages or thompson. Thats how I get mine.

Do you have a metal supermarkets near you?

The not the cheapest, but will sell you the exact length you ask for rather than dealing in only whole lengths.
IIRC it cost £36 for 2x 1.4m lengths from them 2 years ago.

90x50 is an odd size. 100x50 is much more common size.

I used 100x50x3 to replace the sills on my RRC, which was an ideal height, but the origional sill was more like 60mm wide. I chopped out all of the rotten sill and replaced the body mounting brackets, rather than welding box into what was left of the origional sill. The one thing I would do differently though would be to weld some tree sliders onto the box section before welding it to the vehicle.

Bristol is a bit far  :(

Use steelstocks regular through work ,

90x50 is not a standard size  ;) 100x50x3/4  is prob closest standard

Try looking for a local fabricators place, somewhere that makes things out of steel - we've got a really friendly place (no where near you unfortunately  :(), and they'll sell you the offcuts from long lengths..........normally for a 'drink'.

I got a 2m long length of 3"x4" section for a tenner...........the bloke actually cut it for me off a huge long lump !
