horrible noise

Would driving my landy in difflock for a few weeks with my rear propshaft removed due to a blown diff cause damage to the transfer box? Just swapped the whole rear axle to upgrade to disc brakes and it has a 24 spline diff in it the noise has only started since the new axle was fitted are the 10 spline and 24 spline diffs different ratio? The noise is only when on overrun and dissapears when accelerating. Cheers.

Apart from driving in the snow im out of difflock. just seems wierd that it only does it on overrun. Going to check rear diff tommorow i'm thinking that the diff pinion bearing has gone and therefor the pinion is moving about on the crown wheel.

I,ve had this noise b4 turned out to be a prop shaft bloody horrible noise but strangely  no other symptoms was rear prop i think :)

isnt driving in difflock with only one axle conected the same as driving without difflock (you wont get any windup that can damage the transfer box) i might be wrong.

Trickydicky is right. No wind up with prop removed. Should not have done any damage. Does sound like the rear diff to me. Did you hear it running before it was removed from the donor vehicle? Maybe that was why it was sold? Noise on over run could be down to wear on the crown wheel and pinion. Did you drain the original oil, any odd colour, metal filings/chunks or any other contamination. Prop is a possablity but I presume it's the same prop and was ok before.

have you thought about the front diff ? try removing the front prop all the extra stress on the front diff may have taken its tole.

It is the rear diff, the diff was from a disco and had the 3 bolt drive flange on it so swapped for a new one for a defender which is slightly different in length and has pulled the pinion shaft bearing too much and therefor the pinion shaft had play in it.

He did say "with my rear propshaft removed" - it's probably not ideal but I know people who have done it for several months after propshaft breakages and not had any problems.

By the way, your caps lock key seems to have broken and I think your exclamation mark is stuck.
