Temperature gauge

Hi
I went out for a couple of hours today in my 200tdi 90 and the temp gauge barely moved. Most of the driving was low speed, around 20 to 30 mph. It did creep up a bit after 15 mins of higher speed driving. The heater wasn't working as well as it normally does either.
I noticed a similar problem when I went out a couple of weeks ago. The gauge rose to roughly the middle of the range whilst maintaining a steedy 60mph but once i was on the back roads it seemed to drop right down again.
I know it's been really cold recently ( and was both today and a couple of weeks ago when i was out) but this can't be normal.
Any ideas what's wrong?
thanks
Steve

Sounds like the thermostat is stuck open or at least partly open. My 200 Tdi has been taking about 8 miles to reach normal temperature in the recent cold spell. Did the heater work normally when the temperature gauge reached normal, if not there may be an airlock in the heater matrix as this is the highest point of the cooling system. I always fill the cooling system with one pipe disconnected from the heater box to prevent this.

OK, thanks. Hard to tell about the heater.....it's never been great!!
Is the truck ok to drive with this problem, I'm off to Wales next weekend and not sure I'm going to have time to get it fixed before?
cheers

My missus disco was exactly the same. Thermostat was about £4 from local motor factors and was a few bolts and maybe 15 minutes! I would give it a go at getting it fixed before you go, the difference on ours was amazing.
