Petrol or Diesel???
« on: February 10, 2009, 09:59:40 »
Am currently on the look out for a cheap 90, now my previous Disco & series have been diesel, but I'm being drawn to the man points of owning a V8!

So whats the pro's & con's petrol vs disel engine??

I'm going to be using it mainly for greenlaning and towing a range rover to play days and hopeully trial's

So what do you all think????

V8's are great fun and you don't need a stereo!! as the engine sounds are good enough however

They take more looking after to keep running right
Without a gas conversion they are expensive to run
they don't like water too much, but can be waterproofed to  extent

Having said that..........................

Sound great
Sound great
Petrols cheaper than diesel
less likely to damage if sucks water in
I HAVE THE BODY OF A GOD

shame its Budda!!

Diesels are cheaper to run, more resilient and easier to shift when you want rid whereas V8's sound good and go a bit faster. If it's a weekend toy that'll do a few hundred miles a year it doesn't matter but if you're going to do more miles or any serious offroading stick with the diesel unless you're rich and/or a mechanic.

My 2 cents.

My head says diesel and my heart says petrol. Obvious solution is to have both.

I have both and they each have there good points.

There is nothing sensible about owning a V8, they are expensive, unreliable and hate water but then they do make an amazing sound and have so much grunt. Quite handy for trials which often don't involve much deep water and power is a definate advantage!

But now that I finally look like moving into the challenge world i'm going back to my diesel. Much more practical / reliable plus once i've tinkered with it will have good torque/power.

But its a very personel thing and i will no doubt change my mind next time i start the V8!
