« on: February 10, 2009, 20:47:35 »
Looks like they are putting the driving age up to 18 ...

My eldist is 17 next month so will just make it through but my youngest will have to wait until he's 18 and he's not happy  :(

Some say that this is just a random collection of letters, and that it can only be
understood by Top Gear's tame racing driver. All we know is, it's called The Sig.

Yes, it's been bounced around for years. As said above, even if it were to be introduced, it would make little difference. The high risk period is the first year of driving, not a specific age! Just because someone is 18 rather than 17 won't improve their experience, it's still their first year of driving.

If they want to raise the age to a level where people are more 'mature' about their driving, they would have to raise it to 35 for some people

More than that for me! OK maybe I can be mature about driving but that's it for maturity - its just overrated and if you disagree I'll throw my toys at you

There's no substitute for experience, and as we're better at learning when we're younger, putting up the age isn't going to change much.

If you look around there are plenty of bad drivers who are well over 18 (and they have probably had a licence for years).

Nothing has been said "within the industry" that I've seen.  Beside I don't agree with it, it's going to take 4 years for some "young lads" the settle down and at least at 17 most kids live at home with parents at 18 lots are away from home at university which I don't see as a good thing.

I'd agree with a probationary period though, and statutory retesting.

i completly disagree thqat they should change the age and that young drivers are always the cause, yes there are some muppets out there that once they pass their test they get in their corsa and drive like a complete A$$ but there are also more people in the older age brackets that are a big cause aswell

when i passed my test i was a very carful driver, i had a series 2a SWB which would get 70 at a push and had very heavy steering, and even at 19 when i had my fiat punto i was carful, and it was other people that caused accidents my landy i had some 30 something boy racer run in to the back of me, and my fiat i had a 40-50 year old woman run in the back of me because "she didnt see me" and an 80 something old woman pull out on me from a side road and i run over her wing and bonnet in my disco, i have only had 2 accidents that have been my fault, one when i ran into a fence in my metro, and i didnt put my rangie into park properly, and it dented the rear doors of my neibours van,

i drive faster and more aggressive now than i did when i passed 6 years ago

Reduce the age from 17-20 to 18-20 aught to at least make the statistics look better

simple way to save teenagers lives, ban them from taking passengers and limit them to hideously slow cars.
and teach them to drive in a car with no abs, no traction control, no power steering, no synchromesh. actually teach them to drive!!

Depends whos analysisng the data. Yes if you measure it over a 4 year peroid then it should change to 21, but if the goverment just kept it as drivers below 20 years old it makes it look more positive.

It's interesting to compare car licence testing to motorcycle licence testing.

With cars, you pass your test at 17 and could legally drive a Bugatti Veyron on the public highway (insurance permitting, of course!).

With bikes, before you're allowed on the road you have to take "Compulsory Basic Training" (CBT), then you can ride on L plates. If you're under 21 then you can take your test and ride a low-powered bike (<=33bhp) for two years then ride something more powerful.

If you're 21 or over you can do your test on a higher powered bike and then ride anything you like straight away. This is "Direct Access".

When I took my test in 1996 there wasn't a two-tier system, so at 18 I could have gone and ridden anything.

Would the same system help younger drivers? Probably not, because it's already the 1.0 Corsa / Saxo brigade that seem to have problems and you can't really get lowered powered than that.

My opinion:- Well i have passed my test now 4 1/2 years ago, i have never had a accident of my fault (touch wood). About 6 weeks ago i lost a mate who was in the car with a 17 year old driver. I had a moped thing when i was 16 and that gave me alot of experience of how the road system works. My cousin had a moped, and has recently passed his test no issues yet. I would agree with not allowing new drivers to have passenger's at night time and to keep a restriction of the engine power.

Personaly I think age is not the problem just lack of instruction before being alowed out solo. Make it 18 on your own but with a licence holder 17. More likly to drive sensably without showing off.
