I've Cleaned it a bit ...(intercooler)

Hi All

Tonight I have had my intercooler off and given it a clean with petrol it went in like pale lager and came out  black  :shock: :shock:

I have now descided that it's staying off for a couple of days and I'm going to give it a good soak.

When I started I could hear the petrol running through the tubes slowly and dribbling into the other end after a few mins of sloshing it about it ran quicker from end to end , this makes me think it was well blocked up . So tomorrow it's going in the parts washer at work... :dance: :dance:

To those who have done this before ,How much difference does it make have a clean cooler???

A blocked intercooler restricts air flow to the engine - causing smoke and lack of power (depending on how badly it's blocked).

had it in the parts washer for an hour and loads of goo has come out ,, it's now running clean so I'll dry it off and refit it tonight , I'll give an update afterwards.  :D :D

I cleaned a 200tdi one I used to own out.   Came out like thick sludge.  Once it was all dry and refitted, it made sod all difference to the drive.... :(

It doesn't just restrict air flow, it prevents the intercooler from cooling too.  Don't forget the inside fo the tubes are covered in little fins just like the outside.

Well I won't be fitting it tonight ... :(

After the trip home more trapped degreaser came out so I have hung it up in the garage with the dehumidifier fireing dry air at it until tomorrow.. :D

Fit it in except the top hose, put a rag over the end, start engine, quick blip of the throttle and one dry intercooler and one wet rag.

Well I've put it back on  :shock:

I reckon I've got about 10 mph per gear more for the same revs so it must have been well blocked  :|

still all done now and feels better  :dance:

I am now looking for another standard intercooler so I can have a play ....

You can get spare standard intercoolers for about £25 on ebay including postage, I bought one last week which is currently drying out after the same treatment.

Well the guys sets off with P₁V₁=P₂V₂ but I'm afraid it's far more complicated than that.  This equation is for a fixed mass of "ideal" gas in a sealed state, for exaomple within the engine if you ignore heat transfer etc.

Benouli deals with the trade of of energy states in a flowing Ideal gas or fluid.  If you then consider that air is compressible it gets foar far more complicated.

IIRC, V²+2P+gZ=constant, ie pressure can be traded off against the square of velocity, or when gas slows down the pressure goes up.  It's how aeroplanes fly and carburetors work.

Oh, and why chavtastic big exhausts are a duff idea ;)
