Starting problems.

 I had a 200tdi fitted to my series at MRM services in September last year and since the cold spell started i have been having starting problems. It can take upto 2 hours to start with a jump as it always flattens the battery. When it does start it bellows out smoke and runs very lumpy untill its warmed up and then it starts and runs fine. Any ideas on what could be causing the issues/ Cheers in advance.

check your earth straps- easpecially the crap braided one that runs from the starter motor to the chassis.

Glow plugs- I had trouble starting mine, when i removed the glow plugs all 4 were dead!

other thing is you could be drawing air into your fuel somewhere?

My 300tdi has been a complete cow to start in this cold weather....draining the battery nearly every day trying to start it....ended up changing the glowplugs and now she starts at the flick if the key....

Only thing is I've read before that the 200tdi really doesn't need glowplugs and should start without them in all weathers..!!!

Not much use I know but it might be worth checking them out.

Cheers Freeagent, i'v cracked the injectors 1 by 1 and there pumping o.k, when i jump it i put the positive straight onto the starter feed and the negative onto the block. When the conversion was done he didnt wire in the glow plugs as the 200tdi apparently doesnt need them? i'm going to take a proper look tommorow now that all the snow has gone and see if anything is un-toward. I was wondering if its flywheel or timing problems?

 As i said it takes ages to crank and start and during the whole process it occasionally gives that final crank sound like its about to fire up. But then just carries on cranking. :-k

 You posted just as i was making a reply. Thats right mate apparently theres no need for glow plugs on the 200tdi. Maybe mines a summer time Landy only :D Mind you i'v had that many problems since the build, i think its supposed to be an ornament.

I have to add our 200 tdi has (he says touching wood lol) new glow plugs first turn of key now till then  right  medow lady to start

I'm sure its possible to start a 200 without glow plugs, but I don't suppose LR would have designed them in without good reason.  They are an expensive consideration if they are not needed.  The particularly cold snap could be just the time you need them.  Are you running on fresh pump diesel?

 Yes mate, always run it on tesco diesel fresh from the pump.

Mine was an absolute pig to start during the recent cold spell, taking ages to fire then really lumpy until the engine had warmed a little. Checked the glow plugs and every one of them wasn't working, new set and she starts on the flick of the key now.
If the wiring is there between the plugs I'd try putting a jump lead or a feed off the battery to one of them for about 10-20 seconds before starting, see if that makes a difference.

I'd be inclined to wire some glow plugs in - on consideration that sounds like your problem to me!

We were having difficulty starting our TDi when it was cold, ythe glow plug light came on (new plugs last year) and I'd even turn them off then onn again to get them really hot.

Found out lst week the fuseable link had corroded, why in heaven's name does the light still come on then, that's rubbish

Anyhoo, it starts perfectly now, though it has got a bit warmer outside.
