driving about without a tax disc?

because my life is both busy and complicated my olds are buying my rfl today howeve they are in the next county so, if as may be the case i need to go out in the disco(which is sorned) befor i see them to retreive the actual disc can i, or am i obliged to display it in the car?

If you get caught you may face a fine for "Failing to Display" the disc, sorry.  :(

aslong as the vehicle is shown as being taxed on the ANPR then they cant do much, (ideally you should display but because so many people order their RFL on the internet, they allow you to use the vehicles for upto 5 days with out Displaying)

With regards to a conversation with the police a friend had on this subject whilest the RFL is in the post you can park the vehicle on the road but not drive it until it is displayed in the screen.

Utter BS if you paid for it then use it, but if thats the case why did i not get a telling off or a fine when i was stopped a few months ago for failure to display, i had the piece of paper to say i had paid it online,

easiest thing to do is if you do get stopped, claim when you left the house this morning you thought you had the disc and was going to fit it when you got a minute and that you have only just realised it was still at home, and you are going to get it, they dont need to know you have just left your house heading for your parents,

Steady on Ben, no need to get upset about it, everyone is entitled to their own opinion and to read it how they see the law, just as no two police officers would necessarily see it the same way, its open to individual interpretation.

The rules used to be such that you could get a fine if you weren't displaying the disc, as far as I know there hasn't been a change in that, maybe someone nearer to the actual point of law could enlighten us once and for all.

There was this discussion a while ago on here, and it was pointed out that failing to display a tax disc is an actual offence.  I think it was written actually on the tax disc (i have one here so going to look now)

This is the tax disc from me retaxing me Fiesta yesterday.  As you can see in the bottom right corner there is a little note about the legality of displaying the tax disc, i.e. dont and you can get fined £200

The offence is failure to display.

I had a tug by the  when the tax disc was on the dash board, and not flat against the windscreen. They couldn't see it, and thus were going to do me for failure to display  :shock:. It was only after promising  [-o< to securely fix the disc with a proper holder, and a temp tack with tape they let me on my way without a ticket!

a few years back me and my mate were stoped and my mate got dun for not displaying his tax disk
problem was sum person had nick it of his bike and my mate did not no till he got pulled

you wanna use another vehicles or write on one then display that in your vehicle, as has been suggested - thats fraudulent use and i'll nick ya !!!!!!!

the DVLA now gives 5 days grace to cover the posting of VEL's but the system will tell us if you have paid or not, if you have and not received it carry the email receipt with you in case stopped

its the DVLA that will sting you with thousands of £'s in fines once we submit the paperwork

So this copper says he is going to write me up for failure to display! I kept it polite and said that yes it was my fault, but as I don't pay for the disk surely its a bit ?? to do me for the failure to display?

I then had to explain what tax exempt was and how it works!!! And he then let me off with it :dance: :dance:

when i had my old toyota supra i got fined £150 because the tax disc was in the center of the windscreen behind the rear view mirror it should be placed on the l/h side of the windscreen apparently!

advert on radio the other day stated that you are covered as soon as you put the phone down if you can still be done for not displaying then trading standards need to be told

Thats how I see it too but you could still be done for failing to display unless any one can quote the chapter and verse that says you can drive a vehicle with out one on display?

The offence is derived from the Vehicle Excise and Registration Act 1994 (c. 22).

(1) A person is guilty of an offence if—

(a) he uses, or keeps, on a public road a vehicle in respect of which vehicle excise duty is chargeable, and
(b) there is not fixed to and exhibited on the vehicle in the manner prescribed by regulations made by the Secretary of State a licence for, or in respect of, the vehicle which is for the time being in force.

(2) A person guilty of an offence under subsection (1) is liable on summary conviction to a fine not exceeding level 1 on the standard scale.

(3) Subsection (1)—

(a) has effect subject to the provisions of regulations made by the Secretary of State, and
(b) is without prejudice to section 29.

 :? :? :? :?hi all this is now worrying me ,i live in northamptonshire,i have a discovery with no v5 document because it was written off(only dented wing)so i phoned the dvla to ask about the procedjure on how to get it back on the road ??they told me to get it mot,d then take it to be vehicle checked at peterborough when i asked about tax i was told it would be okay a long as it was booked in(ANYONE LOAN ME A TRAILER :( :()

Apparently if you get a transit and put a set of wheel trims on it , you don't need tax.  :) :)

Slightly different situation because until it is inspected you can't get a tax disc, so that is allowed, but you must carry the appointment letter and only use the most direct route and not go shopping on the way.

Did you know that you can actually drive a totally unregistered vehicle to an SVA test, with no tax disc or number plate?

when I taxed my car onlone the other day when I completed the transaction it said I have up to 5 days into the month to run around on the old disk to allow for the new disk to arrive in the post.
