Does it exist? I appear to be on the verge of LR addiction and may need help.  :-k

Since buying my Freelander I've been looking around more and more - on here and elsewhere - and have an urge need desire notion for another Land Rover. Possibly a Defender.

Now can someone either a) talk me out of it, or b) suggest things to look for / avoid / essential when buying a 'real' Land Rover.

I don't want a "project" - I do know my way around a toolbox, but only where there are two wheels involved...  :)

AND I CANT OPERATE A KEYBOARD WHILST EATING A BUTTY! Seriously your beyond help its an itch that just cant be scratched no amount of therapy will help.I've got a nicely modded rrc and it works for me, 200 tdi, comfy seats, drafty dash,lets water in whilst wading but its great offroad and the big bumpers annoy the taxi"drivers". If i was'nt married with kids i'd probably go for a well modded 90 tdi maybe a v8 and b*lls to the ozone layer and carbon footprint. I think the carbon footprint is the only thing that keeps the rangey afloat on some of the fords!! Just look around and dont jump at the first thing you see (unless you want my rrc for £2000 ho ho) and get plenty of advice from the good souls here on each motor . . . good luck!

Ahhhh.... the rot has set in. No hope for you now mate. Bought my old V8 110 and had it for several years before deciding to get a 90. The 90 was meant to be a simple refurb project....... £9k later and the bills are still rolling in  :roll:

My advice would be to find a good Discovery instead. I realise in standard form the Defender is more capable but the Disco is a much nicer machine for day to day use. One of the local LR specialists is in the process of swapping his 110 hard top (has hydraulic winch and BFG M/Ts) for a 200 TDI Disco as a work truck. He just finds the Disco warms up quicker and doesn't suffer from as many leaks or drafts as the 110, apart from the greater elbow room and better seats.

neither!!!!! they both have rubbish elbow room, get a rangie, i never have problems with elbow room yet i get in my mums disco and bang my elbows all the time

disco has more elbow room (traditional way to get enough elbow space in a defender is to roll the window down!), and more knee room!

defenders are significantly more expensive that equivalent age discos - 2-3x the price.

as with any landie you're looking for leaks and rust, disco rusts on its inner wheel arches, door sills and boot floor, defender is renowned for rusting on front bulkhead, nots sure where else...

Yep, the Disco is wider inside. If you think about it they both have the same track, but the Disco has the bodywork covering the whole width while the Defender has those extended arches to cover the tyres.

Never had trouble banging my elbows in mine, and I'm 6ft tall and big with it.

There is a simple cure.

1   Wait until it is raining (won't have to wait long) and put on your favorite jeans and T shirt
2   Go and lie on your driveway (or someone else's)
3   Stay there for one hour
4   Lightly rap your knuckles with a hammer
5   Spray WD 40 into your left ear
6   Dab some grease on your (favorite) t shirt
7   Rap yourself sharply on your thumb with a heavy spanner
8   Wipe the blood on your jeans.
9   It should be dark now so go and get your toolbox.
10 Empty your toolbox on your front lawn
11 Now collect your tools without a torch
12 Now get your wallet out and rip up a couple of tenners
13 Go indoors, sit on the sofa, receive verbal assault
14 Buy something on ebay you don't need (minimum £30)
15 Now go back out again and tear up any fivers in your wallet
16 Repeat this three times a week for a month

If you have made it this far you are ready to buy an old land rover.  If not, think again.

It's not getting any better...

I thought that insurance for a Defender might be a problem owing to having no No Claim Bonus to use - but it's a reasonable £300ish (Comp) or £400 (TPFT).

Then there's my narrow gateway: No point getting one if it won't fit though. I've found that they're ~1.7m wide, and my gate is ~2m.

I'm turning in to my Dad - but with him it's Jaguars.

Spend several hours trying work why someone should design some that needs changing regularly(eg Oil Filter) in such an impossible place to get at.
undo several nuts with fine thread that about 12 inches long using a spanner which you need to turn over each time because lack of room.
and times the money figures by Five for Jags, and that goes for your insurance and fuel bills.
 
Strangely they have there appeal to Sadly addicted to both just can't afford to get my XJS he Sport 5.3 V12 back on the road at the moment though spending to much on the TR110.

I think his E-Type and Mk2 are easier to work on than more modern stuff...

Has anyone had trouble insuring their Defender "van" as opposed to estate? Most of the insurers only have the Stationwagon listed under Defender 90 / 110.

Mr Boogieman's Defender is pretty close to what I had in mind - although the Q plate could cause problems.

I remember being asked to redo the roof linning in an E type, the fibre board it's stuck to wouldn't come out we figured out that the board was put in before the roof was welded on  :doh:

ended up having to sprayglue the thing in place inside the car after stripping the inside out 

took two days in the end (though putting the lining in only took an hour) :roll:
