sluggish 200tdi defender
« on: February 19, 2009, 21:51:21 »
hi i have a problem with my 200tdi, its guttles strugles to stay at 50 mph, its as if last third of throtle dosnt work, it uses no oil starts on turn of key and blows no bad smoke out, i have changed filters, lift pump adjusted valves. i found a hole in pipe between turbo and injection pump replaced it but still no diferent, have checked diaphram on pump and it seems ok, surely fixing that should have made a difference ?. im wondering if turbo is goosed is there a way to check this, any advice is most appreciated .  regards Iain

if it aint reving the turbo wont work,it wil b lack of fuel or air. blow the air lines out, check 4 any kinked pipes and remove air intake pipes. power of elimination mate!

Check engine timing!! - If the cam timing is retarded you 90 will be 'very' slow!!  I.e. will not do more than 45/50mph.

Next, take the diaphragm out of the top of the injector pump.  Then, operate the throttle arm to give full throttle... look down the hole where the diaphragm goes - does the fuelling pin pop out?? If it does, using a thin screwdriver gently push it back in.  Worth spraying a bit of WD40 or similar down the hole, and operating the throttle a few times

If it doesn't you have found your problem.

While the diaphragm is out, it is worth setting it to its max position  ;)

hi have checked throttle cable and it appears to work ok, ie pulls lever on injector pump as far as it will go, how do you remove the diaphram from the pump i have been told it just lifts out but mine dusnt, i have noticed that although it starts on turn of key it runs poorly for a minute as if a cylinder is out then it seems ok, never did this before, i have some time off next week due to shortage of work and realy appreciate any advice, great time to get all faults sorted, oh regarding timing i had timing belt changed about 18 months ago by a reputable land rover specielist so that should be ok  :-k  Regards Iain

To get the diaphragm out....

Remove the four screws... and in theory the diaphragm will lift out.

However, if it doesn't move, mark it's current position and then turn it through 360 degrees and try again.  They do sometimes need a little bit of persuasion. Don't over do it though....

hrmm....  wouldn't be the first time I'd put one right done by a Land Rover Specialist

Did it do more than 50 when you got it back??

Might be worth fitting a boost gauge to try and see what the turbo is doing (or trying to do).  Also check all the intercooler pipe work, and the intercooler itself for leaks.
