wheel bearings td5
« on: February 19, 2009, 22:02:12 »
hi there folks

just had to change one pair of front wheel bearings (one side only) had to go the full hog ! cutting drive flanges off, replacing the c.v joints etc
then whilst rebuilding found that the bearings had no free play when assembled with the original spacer tube and after a steady run 10 miles ish
noticed this side hub felt slightly hotter than the other, so resorted to backing the hub nut off just until there was minimum free play which seems to have solved the heat problem, but obviously isn't the correct procedure but i am sure getting the correct spacer from the main dealers wont be as straight forward as it seems and the other option being to replace the single nut with the old two nut adjustment method

just wondered if others have experienced this and what have you done?

btw change some wheel bearings last year on another vehicle using the original spacer with out any problems (they where britpart ones )
whilst the ones i have  just fitted are MNR (Chinese i think ) from paddocks
am i just being paranoid or would the bearing have seized eventually
the shinny blue defender with the winch, checker plate body protection, extra seating and windows
and at this point I noticed the n/s air vent wasnt fully closed so lets not forget the mud stained interior and the water logged kenwood 6disc cd

To Td5 wheel bearings properly, you need a selection of spacers.... not just one.

And if you haven't done the bearing lock nut up properly I would not be driving around!!

The easiest option is to revert to the older set up.  All you need is the two lock nuts (2x FRC8700), the locking tab washer (FTC3179) and the inner washer ( FTC5241).. then it's just a case of removing the shim between the two bearings and reassembling with new parts.  The bearings etc etc are the same.
