well folks Im expecting some very good but hopefully polight good and bads on this Im just intersted in truckes we have owned and used and what we thought of them , now rules no slagging off trucks just your personal experiences with them only Ill start
1st 4x was a suzuki vitara lwb 16 valve very impressive all we did is put all terains on and it went just about any where the weight (or lack of) was its biggest helper ive gone places with this little truck you wouldnt believe deep sticky clay to sand (drifts well lol) water fording all sorts with very little trouble (just wd40 thats it) would have another if it wernt fo bigger family.
 The next on was a Vaxhall frountera um Ill not comment as it would be too abusive, Ill just say the very short time we had it it spent more time being fixed than using it when it was working of road briliant even with scoprion road tyres on.
The next was a shogan 2.5 tdi glsx stunning looking truck not rot unusural for shogan Ive been told (not padjero theses being imprts dont tend to rot as much) off road great fun water no problem and as for the brown stuff well just unstopable and again on maxis ht tyers 100% road (though did get it stuck once had to be winched out (lack of ground clearence) loved it but engine gave up at 1600000 was too exspensive to
put right and the 2.5, then a space with out trucks (dipression set in lol) so found a rrc v8 3.9 vouge lpg converted well bloddy un stopable (unless you hit water then you needed shairs in wd40 lovly old girl comfortable  luxuerious warm but electical pain again it had hancook all terain tyers on and as long as you kept away from water it coped with mud like ate it for breakfastand spat it out on the rod well rocket on wheels :lol: :lol: :lol: never relised how powerful these old girls were had to buy a road angle (keep licence longer).
Now the truck we have the landrover Discovery I wish id never listned to a m8 of ours with his padjero I would of been better off excpt for the rot why do landrover make such a good old work horse then not bother to rust proof it , it has and is handling everything we throw at it so far not breakages (sh shouldt of let her hear that she might sulk now lol) got colway mudterains on noisy but very good had to use low gear a week ago to pull a damsel out who had got stuck (inxperience she had just bought her first 4x4 and a very odd choice but wise tata pickup truck and very impressive truck too and very cheep engine though is a pergio tdi) spent the rest of they day playing with her (in her truck and she was grining like a chesher cat she said when she had finished playing What coulor is my truck lol well sorry for diversing but this is it

ive only ever had 4x4s, got my first when i was 16, they were, in order:
a 2.25 petrol 110, great engine, thirstier than a 3.9 v8, rotten chassis, did about 1000 miles and sold it on
a mk3 hilux single cab,2.4 diesel, did 40000 in under 3 years, ifor top, great on the road, topped out at 105mph downhill, very comfortable cab,good heater, sold to a breaker after head went
suzuki sj410, brought as project with no mot for £240, got one for £100 (new exhaust), did 1500 miles in 6 weeks before engine blew, great fun, very practical as it was a van with roof rack, good off road, not so good in fords where you needed more power, even in low 1st, scrapped
defender127 200 tdi, my favorite, it still runs after driving through water 4 foot 8 deep, altough it now needs a rebuilt, loads of room in the tipper body, can carry 2 ton(offroad only), top speed a respectable(given sie and age) 85, once did 29.9mpg, off road its unstopable, unless its tight, big winch, not so good in car parks, used it to drive to scotland with a load on, the cab is a lot closer to a series 1 than a new defender though, it avaraged a 1000miles a month in th year iv had it, its getting the rebuilt for a very simple reason- its earnt it!
rrc with 2.8 izuzu td, vouge se, im saying nothing on it until iv used it more!

ive done the majority of my driving in the hilux, but i wouldnt go back unless  it  was practically free as the parts were so dam expensive, if the parts and offroad gear were landy priced id definatley get another one

My 101 would go anywhere, but at 8mpg you could virtually take a helicopter instead.  I followed some tricked-up Rangies and 90s up Stannage Edge;  when we got to the rocky bits they were hopping around all over the place.  There was no chance of driving round any of it so I just dropped into 6wd and went straight over the top without batting an eyelid.

The driving position however was miserable.  On-road my P38 was the nicest 4wd I've had but I'm happy with the TD5 Discovery for a good compromise.

I noticed you mentioned Funtera, well I always thought of them as a bit, how can I be polite :-k well they used a lot of cavalier parts didn't they :-.

Anyhoo, I still remmber Barry Scott at Whaddon trying to kill his an failing dismally, quite impressive little truck it just needed some man-sized recovery eyes :lol:

I'm often quite impressed by Shoguns too and of course the suzukis, I find it doesn't pay to be rude about other people's truck as we all get stuck once in a while.  Much as I love my RRC it's at outside with 3 wheels because I've bust it, I wouldn't mind but I don't know how :-.

Exactly. I've been towed out by a Delica on a couple of occasions (not ashamed, he runs bigger tyres than mine so I will naturally run out of ground clearance first!). Likewise I've seen very tricked-up Discos get damaged by a tiny miscalculation in route - 6in off course produced one bent exhaust when he came back down.

Anyone can buy all the gear and end up with a vehicle that will go anywhere. What takes skill is doing the same routes in a standard Disco.

Yes, Remember in my early years of driving (1989) going to see some local trials it was amazing how often you would see a Series one with an owner who looked as he'd bought it new winning agaist all those modified  vehicles even though it was running the all original stuff.
 My first 4x4 was an 1973 Ex-MOD 109 3/4 ton (Strange Rover) started life as a 2 1/4 petrol eventually went over to a 3.5L V8 (SDI Vetesse)running 9.00 Continental bar treads which at the time was as big as you would see only really got stuck once that was with the 2 1/4 and with warn our 31/10.50. During the time I owned it a bobtailed in it
 My Second was the D'range Rover (name was on a receipt for an MOT) when I bought Bobtailed 1974 Range Rover only had it six month but enjoyed it for off-roading.
 My Latest and most Off-roaded vehicle is Tomb-Rover Bought new September 2001 and started life as a Tomb-raider 110 Limited Edition. It has spends a lot of time in water (a friend suggested I need to put life jackets in it)and only once had a issue an that was to do with Nav-Track system getting wet. Having a bit of a problem with it on grass at the moment but I have put this down to the fact that my rear tyres have done over 60,000 miles although plenty good enough on the road they past there best for off-road so this Friday I'll drop into Southam tyre and have them replaced.

well i have got a 3.9 rangie,pretty tricked up now,i made the fatal mistake of slating my mates frontera sport 2.0 8valve,it went every where in the woods my wouldt,i.e tight turns and sharp crests,so i never have since slated anything else ever again,the one motor that always have amazed me,for what they are,and thats the lada niva,what a motor :D

well had a couple of Lada Niva's - 5 discoveries- 4 RRC's - 4 LWB sereis and 3 SWB series as well as 2 Pajeros (a mk1 and a mk2)..2 LWB fronteras and 1 swb.. and the only thing that makes a 4x4 good or bad is the nut behind the steering wheel.
Seen tricked up RRC's and Disco's get stuck in stuff you could take a Fiat panda through  and I have got to places in a bog standard series 2A that surprised me - and other people on a p+p day at Cannock...

well ive got a daihatsu sportrak which makes some people chuckle!! but i think its not that bad! ive driven defender 90s and 110s and been impressed but not taken them anywhere y sporty couldn't get to.
had a laugh on a shoot day last year when a gent in a p38 range rover o road tyres was convinced he could get up the edge of this really wet stubble field and i wouldnt be able too. well he has in low range and got half way before slipping sideways, i was still in 2wd and rolled straight past and got up to the top before offering him a tow!!hehe. just goes to show you shouldn't laugh at other peoples trucks!

I've only had the one, that's my current Disco... I'm amazed at just how far these things will go in standard form..!!! only thing that's lets it down is my lack of skill behind the wheel... :lol: :lol: But I'm learning fast...!!!

well the first was an 88"  v8 used as a normal motor realy i was only 18 and every one else had minis or escorts,  had about 3 range rover's as family cars .3.5, 3.9s manual and auto.
little off roading but not much as i always had the bikes for that. then started to get in to off roading so built a range rover with 6.2 v8 gmc found it to heavy on the nose. picked up a series 3 109 ffr and it was the best thing off road, so stuck to them ever since in various forms ie 2.8t, one with  homemade crew cab, diesal and petrol ect... had a disco as a family car which i thought was ok offroad, but to go were i take the series it will need mods. oh i forgot i sold a series 2a 109 to a mate so i could buy a range rover which had been modded with 4" lift, 35"tyres, holly carb bucket seats the dogs! went off roading together one day and i go bogged in in some real sticky mub!! :oops:  my mate in my old series drove right through the stuff,stoppted backed up and pulled me out.
sold the thing after that and brought my 2a back. :clap:

My first was a suzuki vitara that was great fun for the time i got it(summer) i swaped it for a nissan 200sx (240 bhp to the back wheels) so i was a little dissapointed with the performance at first. Then reality cicked in and i realised it wasn't a fast motor so i enjoyed it for what it was, great fun and nice with the roof off in the summer.
i sold the vit and purchased a 109 ex military petrol 3 door which had full camo paint and the rag top ,from day one of driving it i always had a smile on my face it was great too. i wanted the long wheel base because they had a lot more presence on the road than the 88.
it went through a lot of changes until i finaly sold it to a chap in ireland . I miss it very much as it had lots of character and was a great drive. it didn't forfill my requirements as a family man and the wife thought it was uncomfortable.
i now drive a g reg 110 csw that is a great looking motor and fills all the requirements for a family car and to tow our caravan in the summer, pluss carry all the prams and baby stuff we need,
the 109 was my fav because i got lot more waves and good reactions from it and it had a 1 off trim that the wife and i did
but the 110 has more potential for the family.

Only had 1 & thats the Terrano i've had for the last 2.5 years :Dall my other motors have been modified hot hatches but I kept getting told I should get a family car :roll:& I was heading to collecting speeding tickets again :doh:I wanted some thing different so bought the Terrano. because of my back ground I had thought about 24" rim etc, but saw the light after joining here & a couple of other sites & took the plunge in my very shiny motor & took it off road under the watchfull eye of sptb :Pnever looked back since as it surprises me at what it can do every time it's off tarmac. I'm not the best off road driver but i'm getting better (I think/hope) On tarmac it handles very much link some of my hot hatches as you can chuck it about & you always know what it's doing. As the only motor we have it has been a fantastic family motor & very comfy to drive. Would I get another one? YES ;)

First 4x4 was this, straight six monster, it could catch pigeons but at 12mpg and insane parts prices was a dear motor to run and it suffered from tin worm....  Offroad it was ok just had to mind the ground clearance.



2nd is my 300TDi auto, she is the ultimate MPV, comfy, quick enough, fair economy and cheap to fix and goes pretty much anywhere offroad.  I wouldn't ever not want this on my driveway.



I owned this S3 V6 for a while but sold her and kinda regret it....  Made a nice noise and will be a good truck for the guy who has it now...



Now the Ninety is mainly used to get to work i bought this 2a V8 as a toy, she is ok on fuel, good enough on and off road but has been fairly unreliable, i hope i'm getting there with the not getting me home problems....  and She is sooooo LOUD!
